Tourette's is in the classification of a tic disorder. "Tics" are repetitive and involuntary actions, such as jerking of the head and other limbic body parts.

There are two types of tics: Vocal and Motor. A vocal tic can be so much as repetition of a sound, such as grunting or hooting the same incoherent sounds. However, some vocal tics are more severe and can come out as inappropriate slang and/or curse words. This type of tic is called Coprolalia and it only affects 10-15% of the population.

According to the Tourette Association of America, there is no direct linkage to the cause of Tourette syndrome or any tic disorder. Sure, there are some beliefs that environmental factors play a role in the origin, but unfortunately there is no evidence to support this.

TS is more common in children and it typically emerges around the ages of 5-7. They typically start off with minor motor tics but as they grow older the vocal tics may come into play. In most cases, as they hit the puberty mark the tics start to decrease and they live a tic-free life. The reason TS can sometimes be a problem is because the tics can sometimes be self harming .
