If you want to learn a musical instrument, the best thing to do is to take lessons. Of course you can catch anything on YouTube these days and there are a whole host of tutors willing to give their time and expertise for free.

However, in my experience, it's the face to face, real time contact with a teacher that makes most difference. We can switch off a YouTube tutorial; we can’t turn off a real human being; and when they give us homework and tell us to practice, we are far more likely to do so.

I've also found that keeping my instrument lying around makes me practice more. I might be absorbed in pixel art on Google Play and see it when I'm done: I'll pick it up and strum for a bit, almost automatically. Learning means practicing, essentially! And these are the ways I've discovered work best.
