Hoverboards seemed like the next big thing, until they started exploding. Thousands of hoverboards from at least eight brands were recalled in 2017 because the lithium-ion batteries in the devices caught fire. But the problems were occurring well before that, as several airlines banned hoverboards altogether in 2015.

Altitude’s innovation strategy and research team determined that users wanted a better fitting, more effective, longer lasting, and easier to maintain toothbrush. By focusing on the user with a human centered design approach, Altitude developed the Motion, a high-powered, slim profile brush, with dual oppositional oscillating heads and a patented ergonomically correct arcing neck. Motion’s sophisticated color pallet and perfectly placed rubber grips got the customers’ attention, while the refined features and performance delivered on their needs. This results in abandoning the user experience of these devices. Too much of functionalities and complicated design. The control buttons are too close and accessibility was an issue. Most people use portable music players when they are outside(jogging, gym, gardening etc). And it was difficult to hold it during activities. Design a compact design with easily accessible control buttons. Add a clipper to the device so that people can easily use it while engaging in other activities

Ann Catherin Thomas

Due to disabilities with the nervous system, affected children often have trouble with the minute movements necessary for writing or drawing. Each is made of several parts, all of which can be customized based on the age, personal needs and preferences of its user.
Kid-Friendly MRI (GE Healthcare)

Doug Dietz, a lead designer of high-tech medical imaging systems for GE Healthcare, observed that getting an MRI scan was a scary and traumatic experience for young children. He found this during his visit to hospital for installation of an MRI machine. A little girl came very scared holding her parents hands tight for taking an MRI scan. The hospitals routinely sedate pediatric patients for their scans because they are so scared that they can’t lie still long enough. As many as 80 percent of pediatric patients have to be sedated. And if an anesthesiologist isn’t available, the scan has to be postponed, causing families to go through their cycle of worry all over again. When Doug witnessed the anxiety and fear his machine caused among the most vulnerable patients, the experience triggered a personal crisis for him that forever changed his perspective. Pride in his design was replaced with feelings of failure for letting down the very patients he was trying to help. Doug could have quit his job, or simply resigned himself to the situation and moved on. But he didn’t. He returned home and told his wife that he had to make a change. So Doug sought advice on this deep personal and professional challenge from friends and colleagues. Utilizing concepts from design thinking and human-centered design, GE Healthcare set out to change this experience for kids. He observed and talked to users of existing products and services to better understand consumer needs. He collaborated with managers from other companies and industries on crude prototypes of designs to meet those needs. He started by observing and gaining empathy for young children at a daycare center. He talked to child life specialists to understand what pediatric patients went through. He reached out for help from people around him, including a small volunteer team from GE, experts from a local children’s museum, and doctors and staff from two hospitals. After ideation and observation, Doug created a prototype and tested it at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center children’s hospital. This prototype transformed the MRI suite into a kid’s adventure story – with colorful decals attached to the outside of the machine and every surface in the room. Machine operators were also given a script to follow to lead their young patients through the adventure.

The result? An experience that was no longer scary for kids – but actually kind of fun! The number of pediatric patients needing to be sedated dropped dramatically, and patient satisfaction climbed over 90%.

(YOGESH KUMAR K R)

The experience made them realize that the taxi industry as it existed was outdated, inconvenient, and overly-complicated. They set out to change the existing status by leveraging technology to simplify the process of hailing a cab. By 2009, UberCab launched in San Francisco. Just under 10 years after its initial launch, Uber is available worldwide and is now the most valuable venture-backed company in the world, boasting 7.4 billion dollars in net revenue last year.

Multiple factors amalgamated into the perfect storm that enabled Uber’s massive success.

Prior to the rise of the Internet, no innovation did more for the spread and democratization of knowledge than Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press. Developed around 1440 in Mainz, Germany, Gutenberg’s machine improved on already existing presses through the use of a mould that allowed for the rapid production of lead alloy type pieces. This assembly line method of copying books enabled a single printing press to create as many as 3,600 pages per day. By 1500 over 1,000 Gutenberg presses were operating in Europe, and by 1600 they had created over 200 million new books. The printing press not only made books affordable for the lower classes, but it helped spark the Age of Enlightenment and facilitated the spread of new and often controversial ideas.

CHITHRANJALI M(BISP)- Kids tooth brush by oral-B The Gripper: Whether it is teaching kids to wash their hands before eating a meal or getting them to brush their teeth before bedtime, these chores can mean a lot of extra work and stress for parents. In 1996, many parents complained about their kids refusing to brush their teeth, Oral B saw this opportunity to help their increase their market. For so many years, all the toothbrushes sold for kids were as thin as the ones for adults but the only difference it was shorter in length. The challenge was to design a toothbrush that kids actually wanted to use. To accomplish this, they approached the design company, IDEO to design new toothbrushes for them. IDEO came on board and wanted to require some examination during this research process to execute the final product. They went into the homes of ORAL B customers and studied how kids brush their teeth. The whole idea behind this request was because even though most adults know how to brush their teeth, there still might be something that children do differently that might be neglected. Throughout the observation, the team learned that the way children hold the toothbrush were different from the way adults hold it. Since children tend to have less dexterity in their fingers as opposed to adults, kids hold the brush more so in their fist rather than in their fingers. Which is why adult toothbrushes are more so narrow and can be difficult to handle while in the closed fist of a child. Once the problem was defined, they needed to design something that fits comfortably in the contour of a child’s fist. Their solution was the squish gripper prototype. This new innovative style of toothbrush featured a wider handle and a soft, yet textured grip. It was the perfect size and shape for any child. The prototype was then tested in the same households that took part in the initial product research. The results showed improved brushing comfort and overall oral cleanliness. Additionally, bright colours and graphics were included to make the brush more aesthetically pleasing to children. HCD toothbrush is designed by IDEO designers when Oral-B approached them to create a unique toothbrush for kids. Guide to Human-Centered Design by IDEO talks about 3 different stages of design thinking: inspiration, ideation and implications. INSPIRATION PHASE: Is about learning directly from your target you are designing and developing for as you immerse yourself in their lives and come to deeply understand their needs, hopes and desires. In this case, IDEO observe how kids hold the toothbrush and understand the patterns of behavior, pain points, and places where kids had a difficult time when brushing their teeth. All this, gave the design team some opportunities to brainstorm and generate ideas by putting themselves in their situation, to see what their experience is, and feel what they feel. which leads to the second phase… IDEATION PHASE: In this phase, you will make sense of what you learned and experienced, you start brainstorming ideas, identify opportunities for design. IMPLEMENTATION PHASE: Is bringing your solution to life, to market. As you’ve validated the usefulness of your solution with the end-user and gotten your product just right, it’s time to get your idea out into the world. So the design team perfected the wider handle style of toothbrush that featured a soft, yet textured grip, overall shape and size for any child. The product was then tested in the same households that took part in the initial product research. The feedback was really positive and so the product was ready for release to a wider audience. By transitioning through the different stages of design thinking, IDEO was better able to tackle and solve a challenge in the oral hygiene industry. If the design team did not complete this process, then they might have missed out on the observation that led them to develop the innovative product. A small detail created a substantial change in the market.

Paper currency (Aparna Yadav, GEO)

Throughout much of human history, money took the form of precious metals, coins and even raw materials like livestock or vegetables. Paper currency was widely used in China in the ninth century, but did not appear in Europe until the late 1600s. Spurred on by frequent shortages of coins, banks issued paper notes as a promise against future payments of precious metals. By the late 19th century many nations had begun issuing government-backed legal tender that could no longer be converted into gold or silver. The switch to paper money not only bailed out struggling governments during times of crisis—as it did for the United States during the Civil War—but it also ushered in a new era of international monetary regulation that changed the face of global economics.

TATA NANO - The story of the world’s cheapest car - Rahul KP (P2WNA20012)

Ratan Tata was on his way to the airport. As usual in India’s crazy traffic, the streets were full of dodging scooters, typically, none of them were wearing helmets.
Suddenly, a scooter turned in front of the Tata car and lost control, sending a family of four spilling onto the pavement. No one was hurt, but it shocked him.
He began to think: How could he make driving safer for Indian families?
Trained as an architect, he made notepad doodles of new designs – a scooter with two wheels at the back, a scooter with a protective cage, a tri-wheeler with protective bars instead of doors – none of them very practical.

Finally, he hit upon the simplest and most audacious idea of all. Why not simply build a tiny car – just big enough to carry a family like the one that crashed in front of him that day in Bangalore, but cheap enough for a scooter-driving family to afford.
Thus was born the one-lakh car. No one had ever built a car for less than twice that much. Critics, including some within his own company, said he could never do it.

He took intense personal interest in the project, travelling at least once a month to the design centre in Pune near Mumbai to huddle with the 500-member Nano team.

Project leader Girish Wagh says Mr. Tata often grabbed a pencil and a notebook to sketch out ideas, encouraging everyone to speak up. “Even a junior engineer could talk to him,” Mr. Wagh says. He wanted to be sure the car came in at 100,000 rupees, but “when we tried to compromise on customer requirements, he would say no.”

To save on costs, the team gave the car a windshield wiper with one arm instead of the usual two and one side-view rear mirror, too. They even attached the wheels with three bolts instead of four.

For Tata, the prime users were the center of his design of the product.

TJ Parker, a second-generation pharmacist, spent most of his life watching people struggle with managing their medications — dozens of pill bottles, weekly trips to the pharmacy, and time-consuming DIY organization — while their pharmacists had limited resources to help. The entire system was complicated, confusing and did little to support health or wellness. TJ had one foot in the the stagnant world of pharmacy and one foot in the fast-paced realm of design and technology, and he always thought there was a better way.

We started from the ground up...

While finishing pharmacy school, TJ met Elliot Cohen through MIT’s Hacking Medicine. They started PillPack to prove that managing medications could actually be simple. They recognized that fixing pharmacy requires actually building a better pharmacy. Until customers had an alternative to traditional retail pharmacy, no app or smart pill box could truly affect the problem. After making it their mission to challenge traditional retail pharmacies, TJ and Elliot focused first on helping the people with the toughest problem — the 30 million US adults (that’s one in 10) who take more than five prescription medications a day.
PillPack is designed to serve people who manage multiple medications. Each month, customers receive a personalized roll of pre-sorted medications, along with a convenient dispenser and any other medications that cannot be placed into packets, like liquids and inhalers. Each shipment includes a medication label that has a picture of each pill and notes on how it should be taken. PillPack uses PharmacyOS, a software platform created entirely in-house, to help manage each customer’s medications, coordinate refills and renewals, and make sure each shipment is sent on time, every time. PharmacyOS also enables real-time notifications and and an online dashboard so customers can control their shipments, refills, and copays. Customers can also email, text, or call their PillPack pharmacist any time to ask questions or clarify instructions.

... and designed a solution around our customers’ needs.

From the beginning, PillPack’s mission has been to deliver a delightful customer experience. We believe that simple, convenient service empowers regular people to take medications correctly and achieve better overall wellness.

Lay’s Stax packaging

The famous snack and beverage brand PepsiCo recently introduce a new type of packaging for Lays. Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo’s previous CEO introduced the Human-centered design approach in the company which had changed the future of PepsiCo.
Pepsico’s design team analyzed how people are using their products. And they find out most of the women prefer to eat neat and clean. They want to have the last chip in that packet but they are not ready to dump all that small cracked chip into their mouth.

They created a vertical and round bottom can with a tray, so the user can take out the tray whenever they need a snack and put it back in after use. The package also comes with a reusable cap. So the user can store it anywhere.

I believe that you have got a small idea about what human-centered design is and how it works well in our daily life. In short, the design that makes our lives easier are mostly human-centered designs. The main goal of this approach is to create a better user experience and reduce the gap between user and product.
(Vaishnavi menon mtech Geo)
