The attack on Hawaii caused considerable destruction and was considered a tremendous success for Japan.

Influenced by the earlier Battle of Taranto, which was the first to use an all-aircraft naval attack but resulted in far less damage and casualties, the Japanese struck against Pearl Harbour on a much larger scale than did the British at Taranto.

The task force was ordered to engage the enemy fleet if encountered. Yamamoto and senior Navy staff intended there be three waves of attack, but Vice Admiral Nagumo decided to leave after the second. There were also supporting submarines and midget submarines told to destroy U.S. ships if they escape from the harbour. The location of the attack force remained unknown to the U.S. until after the Japanese ships were already returning to the Eastern Pacific; they were not located after the attack. The total number of planes involved in the attack was 350. 91, some were engaged in protection of aircraft carriers and other ships during the attack . The strike launched 200 miles (370km) north of Oahu.

Pearl Harbor was the first occasion (in modern times) when a foreign country attacked the United States on American soil. (The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were the only other instance.)

2300 killed

1 Day late US entered war

USS Ohkalahoma and USS Arizona were destroyed as well as almost every US aircraft

Japan wanted to take control over China without being impeded by the US. So they sort to imobilize them so they could continue there conquest. It was a suprise attack which left the US unaware.

That was their way of trying to lift the embargo opposed by the U.S. After the attack Admrill Yamamoto said "I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant, and filled him with angry resolve." The Japanese didn't want war, just the embargo to end and the U.S. to give up the pacific. They learned the hard way what happens when you attack America.
