As demand for goods sold online surged due to quarantine, Amazon struggled to keep pace with orders, highlighting weakness in its core business as an ecommerce retailer. Over the years, Amazon had branched out into other ventures, such as Prime and Kindle, and had even acquired other companies, such as Whole Foods. Revenue shot up because of these ventures, but questions were raised about Amazon's impact and whether it had diversified too much.

While Amazon is enormously profitable, Covid-19 showed that the company may not have been focusing enough on its core business, reminding experts of department stores such as Sears that expanded too quickly and went bankrupt. After failing to keep up with quarantine demands, other retailers such as Walmart were allowed to grab a foothold in the ecommerce market. Amazon's rapid growth was also a problem for traditional retailers, who found it difficult to compete.

Amazon was originally created as a virtual book selling platform, but soon expanded into selling various other products. The company began to launch other services, such as cloud-computing, Prime, Amazon Studios, Kindle, and Echo. It then shocked the retailing industry by acquiring Whole Foods. All of this acquisition caused rapid growth for the company, pushing traditional retailers too the wayside.

The major draw of Amazon is its wide variety of products for sale, with quick and low-cost shipping. It had effectively monopolized online shopping, and would have continued to do so had it not allowed Walmart and other retailers to compete. By shutting those other retailers out again by focusing on its core business, it can strengthen itself against competitors.

Traditional retailers can better compete against Amazon by emphasizing the perks of an in-person store, including community, tailored experiences, and customer relationships, things that Amazon would find hard to create in the same way.
