The space race forced the two countries to constantly best each other in technological advancements. In doing so, they collectively made large developments in spatial research. 

With the new technologies, gaining new information that furthered mankind's knowledge of space was a constant stream. Spaceships with more room and safer launches into orbit. This guaranteed more successful missions into space, allowing for more freedom on the ships because of the long-distance and time spent away from Earth.
