The tone is depressing because of what was going to happen to the two young lovers. In lines 10 and 11, the author says “The fearful passage of their death-marked love and the continuance of their parents’ rage,” meaning their relationship would tragically end in death because of the long-term rivalry between the parents. The author is depressed that the two lovers had to go to such drastic lengths to end the feud between the two families and love each other in peace.

My favorite foils are the Nurse and Lady Capulet. The Nurse’s care and love for Juliet makes it easier to see Lady Capulet’s detachment from her daughter. Nurse is excited at the prospect of Juliet’s marriage to Paris because she thinks it will bring her happiness, while Lady Capulet sees it as a business deal and a way to get Juliet out of her hair. This story might have gone differently if Lady Capulet had imitated some of Nurse’s qualities rather than being stiff and ignoring her child’s emotions.

In my opinion the greatest example of dramatic irony is when Juliet and Paris are both talking to the Friar. Juliet says something along the lines of “What must be shall be” in response to Paris saying she will be his wife. This is two layers of dramatic irony, the first being that Juliet, the audience, and the Friar know that Juliet will sooner kill herself than be married. The only one who is unaware of this is Paris. The layer second is that Juliet and the Friar believe she will run away with Romeo, and that is what Juliet is referencing as “what must be”. The audience on the other hand, has known since the prologue that both Juliet and Romeo will die.

Mercutio dislikes Tybalt because he is too prideful. Tybalt sees himself as the best in every way. His clothes, his fighting, and his family have to be better than everyone else's, which is best shown when Mercutio says, “More than Prince of Cats. Oh, he’s the courageous captain of compliments.” Mercutio is a free spirit who makes his own rules and finds how by the book Tybalt is to be annoying.

Romeo’s soliloquy shows how immature and love sick he is. He does not know Juliet and only noticed her for her looks, but he’s sure she’s the one. That is most shown in lines 24 and 25 where it says, “Oh, that I were a glove upon that hand - That I might touch that cheek!” He doesn’t understand what makes love last, he just wants to be a glove touching her cheek. This makes it clear to the audience that Juliet and Romeo were destined to fall apart, because they are too young to control their emotions and make logical decisions.
