         <description><![CDATA[<div>-fell in love with the written world due to an early and grew interest in printer's trade (pulled from school to save family printing business) <br>-Whitman founded a newspaper called the <em>Long-Islander</em>&nbsp; and joined other newspaper corporations in New York and Brooklyn<br>-he left Brooklyn for New Orleans, and it was there when he witnessed the cruelty of slavery firsthand<br>-in 1855 Whitman published <em>Leaves of Grass</em>, which earned a large amount of praise and even a letter from Ralph Waldo Emerson (greatly influenced writings of Whitman)</div>]]></description>
