Media Ownership

Concerning about media, the openness of information in Indonesia has started since 1998 in the Reformation era. Media ownership rules have been deregulated so that media can be operated by not only businessmen but also politicians. In my opinion, I firmly believe that diversity of ownership is critical to maintaining Indonesia's openness to grown up their democracy.

The media that owned by politicians tends to be less neutral and more partisan in their news. It is happening because politicians generally either support or oppose the government in charge, so their stance will affect how far or how close the relations are between the owner and the ruling party. Moreover, many politicians use the media which they own to enhance their popularity with the public which helps them to win elections in the future.

In contrast, the media owned by businessmen is more likely to be neutral and objective in their news. There is no interest for them to involve in politics. Instead, they are only focused on producing good television productions and getting as many viewers as they can in order to increase their profit. This kind of media is usually better in terms of ratings compared to the media which only focused on politics.

In conclusion, the appropriate ownership will undoubtedly influence the attitude of the media. As long as the owner understands about the code of conduct in journalism, then it will be fine. But, if the present situation continues maybe the government could start to think about how to manage the ownership of the media to assure quality, objective and reliable journalism.

Currently, there are more opportunities for students to get a higher education in other countries instead of just in their countries of origin. However, there are some advantages and disadvantages that students need to know before they decide to study abroad. In my opinion, I believe that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Firstly, there are several benefits from studying abroad. It is undeniable that studying in foreign countries will broaden our knowledge. Also, we will meet students from various nationalities that will expand our professional network which will be useful for our career path in the future. Moreover, during our learning process, we will gain the experience of an international environment so it will lead us to change our perspective into a more open minded person.

In contrast, there are some issues that we need to consider. Studying overseas is more costly than studying in our country. Other factors that may appear is we will have long distance relationships with our family and friends which could be a problem because of homesick so it will impact our study. Lastly, we will need additional time to learn a foreign language so that will affect the duration of our study, therefore, studying abroad could take longer than it would in our home country.

In conclusion, studying abroad will bring more benefits to our professional competencies, and it will enhance our skills and knowledge to face future challenges. Furthermore, there are many ways to pursue a university degree in other nations, for instance through government scholarships or international funding.
