Hemp is a natural fiber that is taken from the stalk of the Cannabis sativa plant. It contains cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose. Cellulose makes up about 70–74% of the wood, lignin about 8–10% and hemicellulose up to 20%. These long fibres are strong, breathable and resistant to UV.

Unlike marijuana, hemp has less than 0.3% THC, so it is non-psychoactive and safe for industrial use.

Harvesting: When the stalks of the hemp plant turn yellow, it is time to cut it.

Retting: Fibres are loosened from the woody middle using natural moisture or enzymes.

Decortication: Machines break the stalks, separating the soft fibres from the hard inner part.

Scutching & Hackling: The fibres are combed and cleaned.

Spinning: Fibres are spun into yarn, and sometimes they are treated with something to make them softer.

This process uses less water and fewer toxic chemicals than cotton processing.

This uses little water. It only needs about a third of the water that cotton needs.

No pesticides: It is naturally pest-resistant.

Carbon capture: It absorbs more CO2 per hectare than trees.

Soil health: Deep roots stop erosion and help to restore nutrients.

Biodegradable: It breaks down easily when it gets old.

Growing hemp helps the environment and supports a circular fashion economy.
