This is
a picture that represents an important part of my identity as an
Italian-Canadian. It shows what we call in Italian a “daminjana” which is a
barrel that stores our homemade wine for the year. Each
September myself, and my family get together to make our own homemade wine,
which is an Italian tradition my parents, and their families brought with
them to Canada when they immigrated from Italy. Every time I look at these
containers it represents more than just its function, but is a symbol of our
family tradition that we celebrate as a part of our identity as
Italian-Canadians. I took
a picture of this because we are currently in the process of crushing the grapes
and making wine and I instantly made the connection that this was a symbol of
my identity as an Italian-Canadian. It demonstrates my family’s passion to
remain in touch with our roots and celebrate our traditions in Canada.
This
picture tells us about how I see my identity not only as a Canadian, but as
an Italian-Canadian. It represents a tradition that is a part of our life
style. This picture represents an important part of my identity because I am
a first generation Canadian, and this picture depicts how my Italian heritage
influences the way I identify myself. It is a significant part as my identity
as a Canadian. The picture demonstrates Canada’s multicultural nature.
This picture provides opportunities to
expand our notion of what identity is because Canada prides itself on being a
multicultural country, a land that is built and made up of immigrants who feel
privileged to live in a country that enables them to demonstrate their unique
identity and practice their cultural traditions and lifestyles. By doing so,
everyone can offer a unique identity to Canada which unites us as Canadians.

This was a picture I had taken a couple months ago while I
was canoeing on Lake Louise in Banff National Park. The lakes, mountains, and
open spaces is something I always identify with Canada for its vast
landscapes that are so unique in the world.

In my picture, I am canoeing on the unique turquoise
glacial waters on Lake Louise. Surrounded by a beautiful rocky mountain back
drop that resembles the beauty of our vast lands. As a Canadian, I identify
our scenery as something that represents my Canadian identity.

I took this picture because no matter how
many times I return to the Alberta rocky mountains, I still feel a sense of
awe and pride. These breathtaking views make me feel proud of the land I live
in, and simply its vastness and open spaces is a privilege in itself because
this is not found everywhere around the world. This is a scene of my home and
where I come from. I associate the rocky mountains, open lakes and the great
outdoors as a reminder of who I am and where I came from, and I couldn’t be
more proud of it.

This picture describes not only my identity
as a Canadian, but as an Albertan as well. The metaphor of wide open spaces,
the Canadian rocky mountain range, and outdoors, that sits right in our
backyard is something I associate as a part of my identity as an Albertan.
Even when I’m travelling around the world and people ask me what is Canada
like, I always describe the mountains and wide open spaces, or show them a picture
similar to this one if I have one with me. The vastness of the scenery in
this picture relates to the enormous amounts of attributes and qualities us
as Canadians can ascribe to our identity.

This photograph expands our notion of what
identity is through its representation of beauty and vastness. Canada is made
up of a vast amount of different cultures which is represented in this picture
by the enormous landscape. The scenery may serve to be a distinct part of
people identities as Canadians, or it may remind people of their homeland. It
also identifies with the appreciation of beauty and amount of land, resources
and many other rich commodities we as Canadians are blessed with, which is
something we can all be proud to share with the world as Canadians.

This is a picture I took at Confederation park. In the
center of the picture is a monument that celebrates Canada’s birth as a
nation in 1867. The flags of all the provinces and territories that make up
Canada surround the monument to show unity.

What is happening in the picture is a demonstration of our
City’s appreciation for the unity of our country. It demonstrates the
partnership of each province and territory coming together to make up the
entire country, each with their own important contributions.

I took this picture because Confederation
park has always had an important impact on my life growing up, and our
community around it. It is a beautiful park that brings together so many
people in this city. I have personally worked in the park and have a
connection with it and seeing how it brings together the people of Calgary in
a park that represents the forming of Canada constitutes the representation
of citizenship.

This picture represents Calgary’s pride and
patriotism for Canada. It is a place where the people of Calgary come
together which represents what it means to be a citizen. Citizenship entails coming
together for your country, and Canada is made up of multiple cultures and
peoples which are all brought together to make up the citizens of Canada.
This park symbolizes the bringing together of all the different people of
Canada, in all the provinces and territories and represents that even though
we are a vast country, we still all stand together united as one country.

This picture expands our notion of
citizenship beyond being a citizen in your own city, or town, but
demonstrates the unity of citizenship across a big country such as Canada.
Our multicultural differences bring us even closer together and this picture
symbolizes the interconnectedness we all feel as Canadian citizens. This is a
unique part of our own citizenship, that even though we celebrate many
different cultures, religions and traditions, we still feel togetherness as
citizens of Canada.

This is a picture of a soccer ball after a practice
session with the team I currently coach.

What is happening in this photo is a symbol of the multicultural
aspect of citizenship, and globalization represented by the sport of soccer.
Being organized as a team, and by the passion of the players who play it
represents globalization.

I took a picture of the soccer ball because to me, soccer
played an important part in shaping me into the person I am today. Being of
Italian heritage I was introduced to the game at a young age and played it my
whole life. What is unique about the sport is that it is played everywhere in
the world and all the players feel a special bond to the game. I see the
globalization metaphor in this picture as the ball itself represents the
globe, and the team using the ball all come together as a team, working
together to accomplish a common goal. It connects people who are from
different countries, speak different languages and have different cultures.

What this picture tells us about citizenship is that the
sport of soccer is known all around the world. It in itself is a
representation of globalization, uniting countries and people together
through the metaphor, of the ball representing the world. I have played and coached
with players from all different areas of the world, but we all come and work
together for a common goal and for the good of the team. The soccer ball
looks like a globe to me, and represents globalization. The game itself
represents how Canada is a multicultural country but we all come together to
play on the same team.

This picture further expands our notion of not only being
citizens of Canada, but being citizens of the world. Being on a team relates
to unity and coming together for the greater good of the team which is the
metaphor I see in this picture. Being citizens of the world is represented by
people all over the world that play the sport of soccer and come together
peacefully to enjoy the game and to connect to other people. No matter the
differences of language and culture, everyone who plays soccer all share the
same understanding of the game. Just how we should all share the same
understanding of what citizenship means in coming together as a country, and
as a global citizen as well.
