The song that would best represent the tone of the story would be: Slow Dancing in a Burning Room by John Mayor. The song fits every aspect of the story with the pacing and message. Their world is over and burnt, and they’re holding on to any life they have left even though it’s fading. Their love and life with each other is the only thing left to alleviate pain from their loss and suffering.

The boy and father continue South, experiencing a few disturbing situations.

A diesel truck approaches the father and boy, then they hide before being spotted by one of the men going to the bathroom; the father holds the man at gunpoint, then shoots him in the forehead after he tried attacking the boy.

I think a great twist could be the boy dies, and then the man becomes this nefarious mercenary who obliterates all the bad guys.
