This ISTE standard has students tap into several higher level thinking skills. The first of which is the important skill that students must have the ability to be critical of the information that they are locating (Leu et al, 2013, p. 221). With such a vast landscape of information provided by the internet, students must be able to evaluate the information they have found, but also sus out the authors meaning (Leu, et al, 2013). Students then synthesize this research to rely to others. Thus, students must also be able to communicate with others effectively (Leu et al, 2013, p. 221).

With ISTE Standard 6, students may take on the role of teacher to creatively communicate their constructed knowledge to others. As reading is an "interpretative social practice that is at once cultural... critical... and operational," teachers should prepare and be aware of their students' cultures and the different funds of knowledge/ implicit biases students bring to their presentations (Rowsell, et al, p. 520). Additionally, depending on the students culture, some students may have difficulty making eye contact when presenting, or even communicating their ideas at all. Teachers can be culturally responsive by being aware of their students diverse needs and backgrounds.

As the world keeps evolving, the ability to collaborate with others in meaningful exchange has become one of the most sought after traits by employers. In this global economy, organizations are "organizing much of their work within collaborative teams," (Leu, et al, 2013, p. 220). Our students are now being asked to explore global issues, provide solution, and openly challenge established institutions (and even debate others!) through different internet forums. This is possible through the multiple and diverse digital platforms available to students.

According to Ladson-Billings (2014), "youth do maintain notions of membership," (p. 75). In order to meet ISTE standard 7, teachers need to keep this in mind when considering collaborative groupings. Teachers should focus on cultural competence instead of cultural assimilation to give students the agency to pursue issues that are relevant to the individual student and their own lives (Ladson-Billings, 2014). Through cultural competence, both teachers and students develop empathy and understanding when working with others.

Traditional literacy skills and strategies such as phonemic awareness, fluency, phonics, comprehension, and vocabulary will help students achieve this goal because these skills will serve as a foundation to the ever changing expectations of what it means to be literate in this period of time. As suggested in "New Literacies: A Dual-Level Theory of the Changing Nature of Literacy, Instruction, and Assessment" by Donald J. Leu, Charles K. Kinzer, Julie Coiro, Jill Castek, & Lourie A., Henry, to be literate today in a rapidly advancing technological world does not mean someone will be considered literate tomorrow (Leu, 2004). However, having a firm foundation on the traditional literacy skills will be the building block everyone will need in order to keep up with the high technological demands. Moreover, students can transfer the same ethical and respectful behaviors demonstrated in a traditional classroom setting to their online platforms (e.g. respecting others work).

Leu, Elena Forzani, Cheryl Burlingame, Jonna Kulikowich, Nell Sedransk, Julie Coiro, and Clint Kennedy, in this digital literacy age, students now need to develop skills that will prepare them to use information that they have gathered to create, solve complex issues and being innovative with their learning (Leu, 2013).

As students work to develop their digital identity, they must think critically about what information they are sharing with others. Students must learn how to use media wisely as well as effectively, use critical thinking skills when analyzing media messages, evaluate the credibility of internet sources, and consider media's influence on controversial topics like peoples beliefs. The information they decide to share with the rest of the world will then come back to them and begin to define who they are as a digital citizen.

Culturally responsive teaching:

To develop a culturally responsive classroom, teachers must first have an idea of what culture encompasses. Teachers must be aware that culture encompasses things like “ethnic groups, cultural values, traditions, communication, languages styles, contributions, and relational patterns” as Geneveve Gay (2001), stated in “Preparing for Culturally Responsive Teaching”. In order to have a culturally responsive classroom, teachers must put in the effort to learn about their students and their backgrounds. They must learn what teaching styles they are accustomed to and find ways to integrate these things into the classroom (Gay, 2001). In other words, teachers can respond to their students’ cultural needs by allowing them to use digital literacy in a way that integrates their cultural backgrounds into the curriculum. By doing this, teachers will enhance the students learning experience, amplifying the achievement of the established goals.

Traditional literacy skills include but are not limited to:
-Reading
-Writing
-Speaking
-Listening.
These skills are fundamental for student's understanding of standard 1, because it involves the act of selecting, attaining and exhibiting proficiency in their learning goals. Before technology can be leveraged, students must use these traditional literacy skills to:
- Understand their needs as it relates to their learning
-Connect with their teacher and other students through speaking and listening .
-They also need to communicate their needs and growth through effective writing and speaking skills.
"Typically, new literacies build upon foundational literacies rather than replace them completely "((Leu et al., 2017, p. 9). Thus traditional literacy skills are the foundation needed for students to effectively use and master new literacy skills where technology is concerned.

In order for students to drive their own learning and have an empowered student voice, which is the goal of this standard, they must firstly:
-Interact with technology in such a way that demonstrates understanding and competency with new literacy skills.
Some of these new literacy skills include:
-Interaction with search engines
-Locating information for research --Evaluating the research that was found
- Synthesizing information found from many different sources online.
In research from Leu et al. (2013) " At least five processing practices occur during online research and comprehension: (1) reading to identify important questions, (2) reading to locate information, (3) reading to evaluate information critically, (4) reading to synthesize information, and (5) reading and writing to communicate information"(p.6). These skills directly correlate with this standard because taking an active role in one's learning would mean that they must be able to locate, evaluate and synthesize information in order to explore emerging technologies and troubleshoot on their own to enhance their learning experience. These skills are also necessary to seek their feedback using technology and be empowered to fix their mistakes and imporve their learning.

Critical literacy enables students to examine topics and ideas for truth, in hopes of finding what is real and what is unecessary. For instance with substandard 1-D, crtical digital literacy would be the instrument that would allow students to clearly evaluate varying problems with technologies and explore other options. According to Leu et al. (2013) "In a context in which anyone may publish anything, higher level thinking skills such as critical evaluation of source material and understanding an author’s point of view become especially important online"(p.6). Therefore, a student would not fully embrace the idea of empowerment if they are not utilizing critical literacy skills, and evaluating information and technology to test it's accuracy and reliability.

Culturally responsiveness is critical for all aspects of teaching and learning. Students must be able to see themselves represented in the actvities they do and the resources used. Therefore, for this standard, since it focuses on student driven learning, culturally responsive teaching can be easily embedded by giving students a variety of tasks from which to choose, and allowing them to focus on what they identify with most. Having a say in one's learning, allows for a successful outcome. Therefore, since this standard is about choosing one's own goals and interacting with technology to improve one's learning, a culturally responsive environment is crucial. Therefore, when teachers take into account a student's culture and the diversity present in the classroom, students would be able to relate their learning to their cultural environment.

There must be a gradual release of responsibility within learning. The teacher needs to guide the students to work and problem solve on their own. Teachers can guide students to choose high-quality and culturally rich texts (Boggs et al., 2016, p. 667). Project-based learning is a great way to incorporate these skills and use new technologies effectively (Lackie, 2019). There are many visual and aural resources that can be used. Teachers need to provide the foundation and groundwork to lead students to find and explore new literacy skills through technology. We need to help our students learn how to use both traditional forms of literacy (printed text) and digital literacy efficiently and productively. It is important that we give them the opportunity to have a "bi-literate brain" and have optimal skills needed for deep reading on and off screen (Alcott, 2019).

Critical Digital Literacy allows students to look closer at texts and analyze deep concepts with a different perspective. Critical Digital Literacy opens the door for debates and communication to occur in result to the texts and research done. These debates, collaboration, and gradual release of responsibility give students a growth mindset. This encourages them to figure out how to solve problems on their own and in collaboration with others to expand their thinking (RSA, 2015).

The resources that we introduce and provide to our students need to be culturally responsive. We must make sure that they are culturally appropriate and inclusive of diverse cultures. The literature that we provide to our students can help them understand and make sense of difficult topics, differing perspectives, and different cultures (Boggs et al., 2016, p. 665). It is important that students are provided with texts and resources that they can relate to and connect with. It is important that the literature that is chosen represents windows and mirrors that all students can see themselves through. It is important that the people, settings, and concepts are understandable for all students. If they aren't, the teacher needs to provide the background knowledge needed to comprehend the given topic or provide resources to help expand their thinking and understandings. Culturally rich and responsive literature provides the opportunity for open-ended thinking and dialogue to take place, while children form deeper understandings and become more accepting of different cultures and people (Boggs et al., 2016, p. 674).
