Lacan, The Mirror Stage :

The idea of the "mirror stage" is an important early component in Lacan’s critical reinterpretation of the work of Freud. Drawing on work in physiology and animal psychology, Lacan proposes that human infants pass through a stage in which an external image of the body (reflected in a mirror, or represented to the infant through the mother or primary caregiver) produces a psychic response that gives rise to the mental representation of an "I". The infant identifies with the image, which serves as a gestalt of the infant's emerging perceptions of selfhood, but because the image of a unified body does not correspond with the underdeveloped infant's physical vulnerability and weakness, this imago is established as an Ideal-I toward which the subject will perpetually strive throughout his or her life.

For Lacan, the mirror stage establishes the ego as fundamentally dependent upon external objects, on an other. As the so-called "individual" matures and enters into social relations through language, this "other" will be elaborated within social and linguistic frameworks that will give each subject's personality (and his or her neuroses and other psychic disturbances) its particular characteristics.

Further Readings (related to Jekyll & Hyde) 2 : A study in dualism: The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The characters in the novel manifest characteristics of the structural theory of the mind. Mr. Hyde would seem easily recognizable as the id, seeking instant gratification, having an aggressive instinct, and having no moral or social mores that need be followed. He takes pleasure in violence and similar to the death instinct ultimately leads to his own destruction. Dr. Jekyll is then the ego; he is conscious and rational, and is dominated by social principles. He has a difficult time juggling between the demands of the id, represented by Mr. Hyde, and the superego as represented by the proclaimed and implicit morals of Victorian society which prided itself on refinement and goodness, and is shocked by the seeming nonchalance with which Edward Hyde indulges in his debaucheries. In the novel, Dr. Jekyll gives in to his impulses and after initial pleasure soon cannot control their power. Rather than let Mr. Hyde go free and realizing that Hyde needs Jekyll to exist, he decides to end his own life.

Further, by labeling Mr. Hyde as a “troglodyte”, Stevenson seems to make a comment on the theories of evolution and that he considered Hyde that is savage, uncivilized, and given to passion: poorly evolved. Edward Hyde represents a regression to an earlier, less civilized, and more violent phase of human development.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2738358/

The allegorical complexity of mirrors and mirror imagery provides no limit to the mirror’s usefulness as a literary device. Gleaming brightly with the clarity of awareness and self-knowledge, blurred to suggest a distortion of truth or delusion, cracked to convey calamity or a tragically fractured identity, or horrifyingly empty to reflect a relinquished or lost soul, the mirror has served the imagination of writers for centuries. In nearly every genre of literature, the mirror has remained an intricate representation of identity and self-consciousness and has reflected oppositional themes of reality and illusion, candor and deception, logic and disorder, narcissism and self-loathing, symmetry and imbalance, and flattery and harsh indifference. Through mirrors we see our cognizant, social, “better” self and the natural world in which we live, while also glimpsing, and sometimes succumbing to, the darker, depraved image of our subconscious “second” self and the frightening, otherworldly realm in which it resides. It is these richly complex, magical, and often contradictory aspects of the mirror that continue to make it an irresistible and poignant symbol of identity intact and identity in crisis in tales of fantasy and fiction. Whether you accept, reject, fear, or embrace the mirror and what is reflected therein, it is possible, as E. T. A. Hoffmann’s narrator in “The Sandman” suggests, that “you will come to believe that real life is more singular and more fantastic than anything else and that all a writer can really do is present it as ‘in a glass, darkly.’”

1)
Atmosphere
- The atmosphere of the scene is kind of mysterious and agonizing: the lawyer is discovering the real identity of both Edward Hyde and Henry Jekyll.

Action
- Jekyll is describing his situation to the lawyer: as it is a story that he is telling to someone, there is not a lot of action except the transformation. Jekyll accentuates more on his feelings and his new physique and identity.

Feelings
- Dr Jekyll is feeling a particular way: before his transformation, he was hesitating a lot about drinking his potion but his curiosity made his courage grow into him. During his transformation, he really suffered and was totally out of him: he felt that his body was constantly crushed. But after the transformation, his feelings are totally different. He described it as a rebirth: a feeling of well-being invaded him.

2)
Adaptation
If we did an adaptation of this text, we would definitly make the transformation of Henry Jekyll as the most important scene because it is really visual. During the transformation, playing with shadows, darkness, sounds (Jekyll's screams and moans) and camera movements would intensify the creepiness and the horror felt by the audience. To make the transformation more surprising, the hideous face of Mr Hyde would be hidden until the end of the scene.

The atmosphere is heavy, we picture a dim light, a lot of contrast to show the contrast between his two personalities. The story happens in the Victorian era, so the house could be kind of gothic to scare a little the spectator while situating the story in time.

The action takes place in the doctor's cabinet. He makes a potion to separate the good from the evil within him, hesitates a lot and in an instant of bravery, drinks it. After agonizing for a moment, he ends up transforming into his evil self, Mr Hyde. He goes to see himself in the mirror, accepts this new self as him, then goes back to his cabinet to transform back. The deed is done.

The feelings are fear, of the new personality but also of the dark side the spectator might see in himself. The point of that story is that everyone has a dark side, and we see a case of it being unleashed, so the spectator might be scared of what would happen if THEIR dark side was unleashed, which makes the whole thing unsettling.

Adaptation:

There would be some kind of suspense, before we see his face, tension to see if he is drinking the potion or not. It could be done with music, a subjective point of view... We could stay for a long time on the moment before he drinks the potion, with shots of the potion, his eyes, one after another as if these two were fighting, until he finally drinks it, with the music being more and more dramatic. Then there could be a moment of silence, where nothing happens, to make the spectator wonder about what is going to happen. Then he starts convulsing, and accidentally makes his lamp fall on the floor. The convulsions last for a while, until, on a close up on his face where we only see his mouth, the rest of his face being in the shadows due to the lamp dropping, an evil grin appears on his face. Then we only see him from the back, or not in the light enough to be sure about his appearance. Then he touches his face and starts walking around the house, kinda lurking in the shadows, with an almost animal way of walking, until he opens a door and find a mirror. Then we see a reaction shot of him looking at himself, until we finally see the mirror and his final appearance. First he looks startled, the he smiles and looks content with himself. He then peeks at the window, and realizes dawn is coming. He then hurries to his cabinet, makes the potion and drinks it again. We then watch him transform back into the doctor again.

Constance will rap this

It's what gets between her and her son and stops her from being a good mother, because she is still "haunted" by his memories - and in the movie, she is literally haunted by a physical ghost. The book who keeps coming back might stand for her invasive thoughts, that she cannont stop. Meanwhile, her son keeps talking about monsters because he is haunted as well in a way, he feels the emptiness his father left in the house his mother fails to fill, and she keeps hurting him because of that.

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

The Babadook is a metaphor for depression and grief. The protagonist doesn’t want to talk about the monster and aknowledge that it exists so its only grow stronger, which is like her grief for her husband. It is said at the beginning of the film that even if she lost her husband so many years ago she avoid the subject and is still very sensitive about it. As the movie goes on, the monster have more and more power on her, driving her crazy and making her forgot who she is. Her son see the monster and knows it’s real, because he knew his dad died and he accepted it, for example in a scene he is playing in the cupboard with his father’s old clothes and his mother doesn’t want him to touch anything. At the end of the movie they “fight” the monster, but it doesn’t disappear completely it still lives in their cupboard meanings that grief never really goes away but you have to learn to live with it.

In this movie, the monster represents the anxiety and the depression of the protagonist. Indeed, the mother seems to be overwhelmed: her situation with her son is really complicated. Thus, the woman and her son are going through a serious crisis. The monster appears, grows and becomes stronger as the situation gets worse. The babadook is depicted as a dark creature: the woman wants to get rid of it, but she does not realize that the monster is literally inside of her.

At the end of the movie, the woman confronts with her depression and finally let it go: she accepts it and continues to live with it; but this time, she will never let it get the upper hand anymore.
The depression is something that can ruin a life: it can easily become horrifying, so the comparison with a monster is justified.

The monster in this horror movie represents the main character's depression facing her husband's death and having to raise her difficult son alone. She hides under false appearances and tries to push away the painful memory of the tragic accident in which she lost her loved one. She also feels guilty of his death, as he was driving her to the hospital to give birth to their son. She also holds her son partly responsible even though she doesn't admit it to herself.
As she tries to hide her pain and anger, she hides herself and keeps quiet. She tries to be the perfect mother, ever so forgiving and kind to her turbulent son. He too is disturbed by the death of his father but even more so by the distress of his mother that he desperately wants to love and protect.
Therefore when the Babadook monster first comes to torment the young sensitive boy, the mother is even more deeply touched and lets go of all the dark thoughts and feelings she has been keeping up. They learn to tame the adversary together but not completely overcome it. The mother and son have to learn to live with their grief, and move on.

The Babadook stands for anxiety, loneliness, depression and tireness. Indeed we can assume that when he starts to appear more frequently he represents anxiety, but also loneliness as the woman felt rejected by the police when she saw the babadook clothes. The depressions is depicted by the fact that her son is "terrible" and no one is helping her so she is loosing confidence little by little whereas the babadook is gaining power.
How the director was representing those feelings was by hiding the Babadook most of the time at the beginning and finally showing him at the end of the movie when the woman is totaly crazy. The fact that the creature was talking and whispering also means that he was always here.

What does the monster stand for? How is it conveyed in the film?

The main character is a widower and a single mother. She lost her husband is facing grief and depression: that’s what the monster stands for. He is the embodiment of that woman’s loss of her husband. She is in denial of that grief and tries to hide it. She tries to focus on the education of her son but in doing so, she just assert the situation between her and her son. He can see his mother’s pain. He also feels loss in a different way -he can hear the monster, so he knows he’s there- and that could explain his distressful and violent attitude. Depression is clearly pictured here as a bloodthristy monster. The more you try to shut it and hide from it, the more the monster will get stronger and more present. It’s a way to show that depression can very quickly become a never ending loop, where you can just fall and lose yourself. The only way to get out of it is to face the monster, show your weaknesses but also your strength, and learn to live with the monster. The characters accomplish that by working together and fighting the monster. The monster is weak, but still there in their cupboard -just like loss and depression can never really be get rid off, but can only be acknowledged and lived with.

I think the monster in the film stands for a mixture of grief, trauma and lack related to the death of a husband for Amelia and the absence of a father for Samuel. Indeed, the mother cannot face her suffering, she represses her feelings until they destroy her from within. Babadook takes the form of an inner demon that personalizes all the repressed sufferings of amelia. By hiding all her husband's memories, she only increases her pain.
In addition, Amelia lost her husband on the same day she gave birth to Samuel. Thus the monster can represent alma's repressed hatred towards her son. She feels guilty for not loving her child so she unconsciously holds him responsible for her husband's death. Samuel sees the monster with his child's soul, that is, as an evil creature that destroys his mother little by little. The creature we can see corresponds to Samuel's vision. In reality, the monster comes from the mother, from her illness which gradually pushes her into madness. The house takes the form of the psychic state of amelia.
Amelia will have to face her fears to survive, she must confront and fight her inner monster, so when she vomits, she spits out part of the monster but another part is still present.
At the end of the film, Amelia feeds the monster in the cellar, which shows that she has managed to live with her trauma.

Once upon a time, Hortodile the Crocodile had a great idea. An amazing idea, if i might say so. After moons and moons of work, she managed to finish her Invention. She was really happy with the result, but she needed just a little thing to make it perfect, and she couldn't find it herself. She then decided to go see her neighbours, and ask for their help.

She first went to see the oldest fish in the river, Tartanchon the Tuna.

"Knock knock", she said, "it's Hortodile the Crocodile ! I need your help Mrs Tartanchon !"

Tartanchon the Tuna opened the door and let Hortodile the Crocodile in.

"What can i do for you ?", said Tartanchon the Tuna.

Hortodile started to show her Invention, and explained it to Tartanchon. But Tartanchon couldnt focus on Hortodile's story. She interrupted Hortodile to say:

"Young lady, i'd like to focus on your invention but i just can't ! Its absolutely impossible, look at you !", shouted Tartanchon the Tuna.

Hortodile was confused. She tried to find what was the problem. Did she have something stuck in her teeth ? Or a stain on her skirt ? What caused such an issue for Tartanchon the Tuna ?

"Your miniskirt, Hortodile !", said Tartanchon the Tuna with judgemental eyes, "you can't walk around alluring people with those damn legs !"

Hortodile the Crocodile packed her Invention and left, angry. She was very disappointed in her neighbour's comment. She was wearing a miniskirt indeed, but that wasnt the point of her visit at all! As she walked away, she hear Tartanchon the Tuna shouting from afar, "Im only saying this for your own good, young lady!"

Hortodile was not willing to give up yet, and she decided to go see her other neighbour, Souriceau the sneaky Snake.

"Knock knock", she said, "it's Hortodile the Crocodile ! I need your help Mr Soriceau !"

Soriceau the sneaky Snake opened the door and let Hortodile the Crocodile in.

"What can i do for you ?", said Soriceau the sneaky Snake.

Hortodile started to show her Invention, and explained it to Soriceau. He looked interested, but after she finished, he said:

"Your pitch was interesting ! However, if you want to show this to people, you will have to change clothes ! You can't expect people to take you seriously, they will be too distracted by your miniskirt !"

She walked out and slammed the door, very angry this time !

"Damned neighbours", she thought, "can't any of them focus on what im saying and not what i look like ?"

Hortodile the Crocodile sat on the side of the road, alone and sad. All of a sudden, Kylia the Kool Kangaroo passed by on her cool motorcycle. She stopped to talk to her.

"Hey Hortodile", she said, "that's a cool invention you got there, what is it ?"

Hortodile's eyes sparkled with joy, and she got up to explain her Invention to Kylia the Kool Kangaroo.

Kylia was very interested, and at the end of Hortodile's speech, she said:

"That's funny, I am also working on an Invention and I just need one little thing to make it perfect ! Maybe we can work together !"

Hortodile the Crocodile was filled with joy, and jumped on Kylia's cool motorcycle, and they rode off on the rode of cool Inventions. They became the world's most famous and richest Inventors. They were invited on TV shows and all, and they never came back to see Tartanchon the Tuna and Soriceau the Sneaky Snake... But Tartanchon the Tuna and Soriceau the Sneaky Snake did see them again, on Tv, on ads and publicity everywhere in the city -always wearing what they wanted.

Moral of the story: Haters gonna hate -Taylor Swift

She has been raped the previous summer and cannot verbalize her trauma.

In this excerpt, Brian's father is asking his son to help him sever the head of a turtle. This gory and bloody scene works like a violent reminder for Brian. The blood shed and the graphic details of the scene stir a violent flashback, a haunting hypotyposis to which Brian transfered all his fear and his trauma. We also understand that Brian never had any kind of father figure or masculine figure to build his identity on. Therefore, the link with the other is made difficult, as well as the path to healing.

I) A DIFFICULT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FATHER AND SON
a) A lack of sensitivity. The father as the epitome of repression.
b) An illuminating violence : the revelation of a total lack of connection between father and son.

II) A KEY SCENE WHERE THE TRAUMA IS REENACTED THROUGH A FLASHBACK AND A BLACKOUT
a) Passing out, Giving in.
b) Ekphrastic blood and flesh

Severing a turtle's head according the father : a rite of passage for Brian to become a man, overcome his childish sensitivity. But Brian automatically passes out at the sight of the ekphrastic blood of the turtle, which works like a trigger for the trauma. This episode could be seen as a reenactment of the rape Brian has been throught, this time he would be the perpetrator (as he sees himself in the phallic knife the father is using). However, this gory act is done without his consent (just like the rape).
