Island of the Blue Dolphins by Lisa Nowakowski

Chapter 1

The story begins with villagers on an island in the Pacific Ocean. A girl and her brother are off picking roots. They see a ship coming. The ship docks and the captain comes on shore. The men greet him. The captain says that they are there to hunt Otters. The chief doesn't like this. The captain says that the villagers wouldn't have to do anything. They agree to split the pelts equally.

Chapter 2

There were many fish, bass, for the tribe. The island is a dolphin shape, with the tail was pointing to the sunrise. Two Aluet men wanted the villagers to share the fish. The chief said, "No."

Chapter 3

The Aleuts were killing and skinning the otters. Karana was afraid that the Aleuts were going to leave without paying. Her father didn't seem very concerned. He was making a new spear. It looked like the Aleuts were preparing to sail off.

Chapter 4

The Aleuts fought with the village people. Many men died.

The jobs in the village had to be divided up between the men and the women. This caused many problems. They chose a new chief. Kimki went off to another island.

Chapter 6

Kimki was gone for one moon, one month. The village prepared just in case the Aleuts came back. Then one night a ship came, that was different from the Aleuts. It had white sails. The white men were sent by Kimki to take them to another island -- Santa Cantalina.

Chapter 7

The whole village went on the ship. Ramo wanted his fishing spear and left to go get it. They left him there. Karana jumped off the boat so she could get Ramo back. She let go of the basket because it was too heavy. Her yucca skirt was destroyed. She made it back to the island. Ramo asked when the boat would come back.

Chapter 8

Ramo and Karana looked for food. They found a pack of wild dogs in their village. The dogs ate all their food. Ramo died on his way to the cliffs to get the hidden canoe. He had an open wound on his neck.

Chapter 9

Karana looked and made weapons. All she could think of was Ramo. She had nightmares. She finds a large rock to sleep on, where the wild dogs can't get her. Karana was beginning to loose hope for the ship to come and get her.

Chapter 10

Karana killed 3 dogs, but not the leader. She decided to leave the island. She followed the stars. She decided to go back to the island because her canoe was leaking. The dolphins guided her back to the island.

Chapter 11

Karana came back from her journey, exhausted. She was looking for a new place to build a house. She decided not to build one by the sea elephants, because they were noisy. There was also another place, but it was by the wild dogs' lair.
