My metaphor for teaching and learning Grammar would be LEGO. LEGO is a modular construction and Lego blocks represent grammar elements that can be broken into smaller units. Learners need to learn nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc., and combine them to make complex structures. Another resemblance between Grammar learning and teaching with building Lego is that both require creativity. Learners combine different elements of Grammar in various ways to express their ideas creatively. In addition, building with Lego contributes to problem-solving. I guess this question needs two different answers as language learning and grammar are two related but separate items. My metaphor for language learning can be a garden. You need to tend to your garden if you want it to function and expand. You need to water your plants and flowers, remove weeds and any other unwanted growth, check the soil etc., otherwise the items in your garden can wither. Language learning is the same. You need to cultivate it all the time. In line with this, my metaphor for grammar would be soil on which plants and flowers grow. For learners: It might seem white from a distance but it has a range of colors. The rules of grammar seem to be set in stone (either black or white, in case of an iceberg > white :)) but they constantly change according to context etc. That is why it confuses students who have difficulty navigating through dark waters and are afraid of hitting an iceberg on the way. Focusing solely on the iceberg while navigating the ship sometimes makes learners anxious.

For teachers: 90% of it is below water and there is hard work on teachers’ side to be precise and efficient while teaching. They need to keep this fact in mind while preparing for grammar teaching lessons.

You can see a train passing through a building as in the picture or when you think you are on ground level, you can look down to see you are actually on the 27th floor. In language, everything is intrinsically connected, and so are grammar subjects. Sometimes a rule may seem too complicated or too easy, but in the end, it all comes together to create a very complex and well-designed structure.

I view grammar as Jenga blocks, it can be extremely fun and also quite scary at times, using the wrong form might cause a destruction. I see grammar as the sand that fills the crevices left behind from rocks and pebbles, the chunks we first start teaching English with, and the bits and pieces of info we pick up along the way. Grammar completes the language. Fills the necessary gaps that would be left empty if we just focus on other areas.
