Post 1- Walter- Character trait- Qaurrallsome

Walter exemplifies the character trait of quarrelsome. This meaning he is defined by arguments and disagreements which can be seen throughout the whole novel. An example of this could be when walter says “Forget it baby! There ain’t no causes—there ain’t nothing but taking in this world, and he who takes most is smartest—and it don’t make a damn bit of difference how.” P. 143

In this quote a conversation from Walter a Routh can be seen to get out of hand as Walter fuels the fire with this quote. Walter often yells and during his conversations many exclamation points are used because of the many points he speaks on. He stays with what he believes in and will argue until he gets what he wants. Ruth is often seen to be calm in some of the conversations were Walter often escalated the tone.

Post 2- Walter- Character Trait- Proactivness

Another character trait Walter demonstrates is proactiveness. Although he often decides to get himself into many arguments he is proactive. Walter goes after what he wants and he can always be seen doing something throughout the novel. “Man say to his woman: I got me a dream. His woman say: Eat your eggs. Man say: I got to take hold of this here world, baby! And a woman will say: Eat your eggs and go to work. Man say: I got to change my life, I’m choking to death, baby! And his woman say – Your eggs is getting cold!” page 33,34

In this quote Walter is talking about how he has to go pursue his dreams in time where the money he is making is just enough. He wants a better job so he can provide better for not only himself but his family to. He has come up with his idea of a Liquor business that he has worked very hard towards and just needs to earn the money for down payment to start. Even when other people don’t believe in his dream business Walter puts in the hard work to get where he wants to be as things eventually take a turn.

Personally I do sympathize somewhat for my character. Walter is just seen throughout the book trying to provide better for him and his family and after pursuing his dream of owning his liquor business he is turned on and robbed of his money from a business partner. Although I think Walter creates many unnecessary fights I still feel he is a good person just a little stressed out. He could be stressed from the fact that his wife is now pregnant and put a down payment on killing their unborn child.

Just like the people in the picture want equal rights so does Walter when he works. He doesn't want to work for someone as a driver but he wants to have equal rights and work beside someone not for them as a servant or shofer.

Also how upset Walter is when he initially doesn't have the money to put a down payment away for his company. Walter cannot escape this poverty and is later found in a deeper hole when he gets robbed by a former business partner.

During the exposition of the book we can see how Walter is making "Just enough" money to get by and how he wants a new career so he can provide more for his family. In the first line of the song it could related to how Walter is talking about his new career and how it was an idea, to where in line 2 where it talks about still flying with broken wings could be the fact that Walter still had the energy to pursue his dream even after failure. Then in lines 8 and 9 you could relate that to when Walter finally gets the money needed for a down payment on his new business and is finally "free".

A theme that can be looked at in both the novel A raisin in the Sun and in the film fences is Always pursuing what you think is right and your goals. This can be seen from Walter's strong business passion where he believes he has an idea that could really benefit him and his family. Walter is willing to follow his dream of this business no matter the obstacles.

This theme can be seen in fences with Cory. Cory wants to play sports all his life and with multiple disagreements and arguments with his parents he is left to only listen to them. He develops strikes throughout the movie with his dad and can still be seen holding/using a baseball bat at times.
