OSLO (Reuters) - Norway said on Thursday it wants to buy electric passenger planes in the coming years to help slow climate change, building on its success with big tax breaks that have made it the world leader in electric car sales.
State firm Avinor, which runs 45 airports in Norway, said the commitment to battery-powered aircraft could encourage development of electric and hybrid technologies by companies such as Airbus or Boeing.
“In my mind, there’s no doubt that by 2040 Norway will be operating totally electric” on short-haul flights, Dag Falk-Pedersen, head of Avinor, told reporters at an aviation conference in Oslo.

Among airlines, “Airbus told us they need a customer and they need a market - and we can offer them both,” he said. “Of course they need a bigger market and more customers. But someone has to start.”

Norway, a mountainous country of 5 million people with towns beside remote fjords, would be ideal for electric planes which can accelerate faster than conventional planes and so need shorter runways, he said.
“It could be that we are presenting a tender within a year or two to the market to commercialize electric aircraft,” Falk-Pedersen said, adding that such a tender might be for 5 to 15 planes of between 12 and 50 seats.

Colombia Reports needs your support to continue delivering you the news without fear or favor.

For 10 years, this website has delivered an honest and non-commercial narrative of current events in Colombia.
TEACHER, 53, ACCUSED OF SEX WITH SCHOOLBOY SIGNED HERSELF ‘THE SLUT’

A pastoral care teacher had a sexual relationship with a pupil and sent him a card asking “Who else can I be a slut with?” after he blocked her on social media, a court was told.

Deborah Lowe, 53, allegedly had sex with the boy while he was 15 and 16. She wrote the card and sent him more than 100 messages after her role at the school moved beyond being that of someone who could assist him.

On the first day of her trial yesterday, it was claimed she and the boy twice had sex at her house and had repeated telephone sex. She allegedly pretended to be his aunt so that she could get him a job and drive him to work in her car, giving them the chance to engage in further sexual activity. She also agreed to pay for him to have a tattoo.

Justin Hayhoe, for the prosecution, said Ms Lowe, of Elmsbed Caravan Park, Poynton, Cheshire, carried out the offences while in a position of trust. “It was suggested by the defendant she could collect him, take him back to her home and they could engage in sexual intercourse, and that’s exactly what took place when he was a 15-year-old pupil.”

Minshull Street crown court, Manchester, was told that the alleged of fences occurred between April 2015 and June 2016, continuing after the boy left school.

She sent the card, signed “love, the slut”, in April 2016 when the boy was still a pupil. I tread: “I’m a mess! You have blocked me and I don’t know what I have done. Who else can I be a slut with? I would never ever upset, hurt, harm or make you unhappy so please tell me what I have done. Is it my fat old arse? It’s my birthday and I’m so sad.”

Police were involved when the boy’s mother discovered the card. Mobile phone data was said to have shown that on March 16, 2016, Ms Lowe called him at 8.40pm for 32 minutes and on March 21 she called him at 11.15pm for 33 minutes.

Mr Hayhoe said that she sent the boy 68 texts in March 2016 and 76 in April, and it was this “that caused him to block Deborah Lowe on social media”.

He said that after her arrest Ms Lowe did not answer police questions but gave a prepared statement. She accepted that she had been involved in a sexual relationship with the boy, but said it started when he was 17 so she was no longer in a position of trust as he had left school.

Mr Hayhoe told the jury: “The issues are at what point did this relationship commence? At 15, as the boy would say, or 17, as the defendant would say.”

He said it was the crown’s case that sex began when the boy was 15 and at school and that although he was not “forced or coerced” he was too young to consent by law.

On other occasions, although the boy had reached the age of consent, Lowe had broken the law because she was a teacher and in a position of trust.

“The relationship was not forced but the nature of the relationship — teacher-pupil — made it unlawful,” Mr Hayhoe said.

Ms Lowe, who dressed all in black and arrived at court wearing large sunglasses and pearl earrings, faces one charge of sexual activity with a child and five of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust. She denies all the charges. Neither the school nor her alleged victim can be identified. The trial continues.

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuela's Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez has criticised as "meddling" a joint statement by 11 Latin American countries calling on Venezuela's government to "guarantee the right to peaceful protest".
In their joint statement, the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay rejected the violence, which has led to the deaths of six people during the recent demonstrations.
There has been a series of anti-government protests in the capital, Caracas, and other major cities, as well as marches by government supporters.
The opposition is planning another mass protest for Wednesday and the government has called on its supporters to hold rival marches.
The Latin American countries also called on the Venezuela government to quickly set dates for elections to be held "to solve the grave crisis which Venezuela is experiencing and which worries the region".
Rodriguez described the statement as "rude interference" and that "these governments misuse international law to back interventionism in Venezuela to attempt to govern the country from abroad".
On Tuesday, the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, called for protection of the right of the Venezuelan people to demand democracy and liberties and emphasized that this right must be recognized by everyone and the government should not be an obstacle.
“The recent actions of the regime to hand out weapons to civilians and urge them toward confrontation are a murderous repressive action that incites violence,” he said.
