Author: Robb Pearlman
Illustrator: Eda Kaban
Publisher/Date: New York : Running Press Kids, 2018.
Pages: 26 pages
Grade level: Kindergarten
Genre: Fiction
Theme: color isn't gender based
Topic: Colors
Artistic Media: The illustrator corresponded the color that the author was talking about on a specific page into the art. The art consisted of paintings of children using, wearing, and playing with different colors.
Literary Elements: This book talked about different colors, and how they don't belong to a specific gender. Just as something like a uniform can be worn by everyone, so can colors. Colors are fun, and shouldn't be avoided because you are a different gender than someone else that likes that color.
Personal Response: I loved reading this book. I think that this is awesome for younger children to read, before they learn from someone that color has a specific gender, because it doesn't. Items that are directed towards children really try to advertise blue for boys and pink for girls, and this book helps shows children that they can like whatever color they want because a color is just a color.

Author: Joanna Cole
Illustrator: Bruce Degen
Publisher/Date: Scholastic, Inc. 1990
Pages: 44 pages
Grade level: 2nd grade
Genre: Fiction
Theme: Team work, learn by doing
Topic: The Human Body
Artistic Media: The illustrations in this book were colorful and painted a picture for what was happening throughout the story. The Illustrator uses cartoon like illustration to depict the famous Magic School Bus series that we all know and love. The illustrations help bring the story alive.
Literary Elements: The class was supposed to go to a museum to learn about the human body, however Arnold had a different plan. Arnold swallowed the magic school bus, and the teacher and students were stuck inside of him until he could sneeze them out. While inside the students were surprisingly able to get a great lesson on the human body, and how different systems and body parts worked. They had to work together to get out of Arnold safely.
Personal Response: I personally really enjoyed this book. This is a fun read for younger students, and the author does a good job of teaching a subject (human body), while making it fun for the reader. While reading I learned a lot about the different part of the body, and I also enjoyed the fiction of it all, it was very entertaining. This series is something that I remember from my childhood, and this was one of my favorites!

She illustrates the mermaids going on their adventure, however makes it educational by drawing different animals and climates that are accurate to their location. For example in the southern ocean they see snow and penguins. She makes each habitat for the wild life present in her illustrations.
Literary Elements: In this book there are five mermaids that decide to go on an adventure to the different oceans, however on the way they split up. The book starts off with all five mermaids and each ocean that they go to they lose one mermaid. Each mermaid decides to leave because they found something appealing to them in that particular ocean. At the end they all come together and share their stories from their different adventures.
Personal Response: I personally loved this book. I believe that this books checked all the boxes to be qualified as a "good book". This book makes learning about the ocean fun for the younger audience. The readers get to learn the names of different oceans, animals, and their habitats. I think that the author did a good job making it interesting for their target audience. I like message that this book has, it shows that branching out can be rewarding.

Author: Louis Sachar
Illustrator: Louis Sachar
Publisher/Date: August 4, 2015 by Delacorte Books for Crime Readers, Random House.
Pages: 181 pages
Grade level: 5th grade
Genre: Fiction
Theme: Things aren't always as they appear
Topic: Fuzzy mud
Artistic Media: The audio version that I listened to had pages to follow along to, however there were no pictures other than the title page. The title page consisted of a picture of a dark and mysterious forest. This picture really sets the tone for what is to come in the upcoming pages.
Literary Elements: This starts off with two outsiders, Tamaya and Marshall running into the woods to avoid someone who is picking on them. Tamaya sees that there is a foreign muddy like substance on the ground and uses this to protect herself, she then develops an irritation on her hands from touching it. Marshall stops going to school, and the combination of this and the rash is alarming. When found out what the substance was, the whole town was in an epidemic and under quarantine. Special forces have been called in to help the town, and this is the start of a life changing event for them.
Personal Response: I really enjoyed this book, it was very entertaining and it was interesting to read this during this time in the world. Although this is a fiction book it is relatable right now with the pandemic that is present. There is an epidemic that breaks out during this book and it was very interesting to read it while we are going through something that is similar however very different at the same time.

The title page is a beautifully painted picture of the main character of the story. It has symbolism in the cranes that are surrounding her in the picture.
Literary Elements: This book takes place in California with a family that had to flea Mexico due to the violence and dangerous territory. Benita is the main character and we see what life as an undocumented fourth grader is like through her eyes. The family winds up in a migrant camp when her father is deported, and her and her pregnant mother have to figure out a way make the best out of these impossible times. Benita does this by writing poems and drawing to help her cope, just like her teacher had taught her.
Personal Response: I think that this was a very informational book. It teaches a lot about the experiences that that immigrants have to go through in these camps. This book also shed light on what it is like for a young girl to go through these things and her experiences with them. I really enjoyed this book, and think that it would be a good read for students.

I think the combination of the writing along with the illustrations really help bring the book together.
Literary Elements: This book was about a little girl who happened to fall asleep while chewing gum. When she wakes up in the morning she realizes that she got gum stuck in her hair. Due to this she tries to find different ways to remove the gum but nothing seems to be working. The artwork made the reading so exciting. There were basketballs, and famous people splattered over the pages. The artist seemed to stick to a certain color scheme, and I think this helped stay focused on the text while still being able to appreciate the art.
Literary Elements: This book is about two twins with a former basketball star as a father. The two twins eat, sleep, and breath basketball, until one day JB finds other interest in other things. This drives a wedge in between the two brothers, and they have a falling out. I think that the artist did a great job of bringing Reha to life. While reading the book, I was able to visualize her thanks to the cover of the book. There isn't too much going on in the background, making it easy to focus on Reha.
Literary Elements: This book is about a little girl named Reha that is growing up as an Indian American in the 80’s. Reha is struggling with the idea of having to pick between two different cultures. At home she experiences culture through her Indian family, while at her American school she has a culture shock because of how different it is. She tries to adapt to her new life at this school, however her mother is fearful that she is losing her roots. Her mother falls ill with cancer, and Reha tries to do everything she can to help in these hard times.
Personal Response: I loved reading this book. It is educational for single culture students to see the struggles that Reha had to face moving to America. This book is a good tool to provide students, and would help encourage a culturally responsive classroom. This book helps answer questions that students may have about culture.

On the few pages that there are illustrations on, they are in black and white and give the look of a doodle on a page. Because there aren't very many illustrations, it is a fun surprise when one comes up.
Literary Elements: In this book, Junie B. The teacher announced it was job day on Monday, and before she could even think of a job she told the whole class she had the best job idea ever. She then later gets in trouble with the janitor. This gives her the best job ideas for her class, only they don't seem to agree.
Personal Response: I love this series of books, when I was younger this is something that I enjoyed, and it is interesting to see that they are still so popular! In each house there was a different food that represented their culture. in the end they all got together and shared their dishes with each other.
Personal Response: This is a very cute book. The target audience is very young, so culture may be a hard concept to grasp, however this book does an amazing job at teaching a younger audience about culture. Every little kid loves food, so what better way to show different cultures than through food. There are a lot of different components that go into culture however, food is something that is easy for a young student to understand.
