He didn't get to go to a large town, in this case, Florida, to pursue engineering (chapter 4). Because of this, he feels trapped like he didn’t get to fulfill his life purpose.

High themes include things like snow, ice, purity, life, and death. Ethan and Mattie wanted to commit suicide by sledding down the snowy hill into the Elm tree (chapter 9). The snow in this scene represents that their death would’ve been cold, clean, and quick for the both of them. However, since they both survived, they slipped into unconsciousness while feeling the cold ground beneath them. They felt like they were dying anyways because of the coldness.

Edith Wharton gave us a very detailed description of Starkfield that all pointed to Starkfield being a very bleak and boring place (introduction). The author doesn’t have to tell us that Starkfield is bleak. The readers just know from all of the details.

In How to Read Literature like a Professor, the author talks about how E. M. Forster's earlier novels had to do with English tourists traveling to a new place and committing terrible acts while there. The same can go for Mattie. In the novel's time (1910), it was extremely unheard of and embarrassing to be caught cheating on your spouse or cheating with a married man. Although we don't know how Mattie was before the time of the main chapters, we can assume that if she had never come to Starkfield, she wouldn't have had a relationship with her cousin's husband. The reader can assume that the reason for her incredulous acts, like wanting to commit suicide for "love," (Chapter 9), is her being away frome home. Mattie must readjust to her new life in Starkfield and her fancy for Ethan is part of it.
