P : I see a man standing in the middle of two other men. I noticed the man in the middle first. I see the words "The Genuine Othello". It's different because it seems like the man in the middle, who is most likely a slave, is trying to stop them from fighting. One man is wearing a uniform with the American flag and the other is wearing a Confederate Flag. The slave is wearing all white which typically symbolizes goodness and purity.
I : The 2 white men are trying to fight each other, but the slave in the middle is trying to stop them. The Civil War was happening when this cartoon was made. The audience for this cartoon might be the people who arent aware of the ultimate cause of the Civil War(slavery). I think that this cartoon is about the North's fight to stop slavery and the South's fight to keep it. The cartoonist's opinion on this issue is that slaves are caught in the middle of the two sides and they did not even do anything wrong.
C : I wonder if each man represents a significant person from the Civil War and if so, who are they? Why did the cartoonist put the slave in the middle and who did the cartoonist create this cartoon for?
