Backwards Design is...
1. Identify desired results
2. Identify evidence of learning
3. Design the instructional plan
This design it to have the goal on the forefront rather than the tail end of lesson planning. keeping the goal in mind in the begging helps educator find things to meet those goals to put into a lesson. Formal assessments is one of the key factors that the backwards design relies upon for guiding the teacher. It's not necessarily all about content based teaching but rather skills based.

In order to implement backwards planning in our curriculum, we need to begin at the end goal; what we want our students to walk away from this class with. Once we have established the destination, we can begin to plot our route.

Once we know where we're going, we can work on figuring out what we will need to get there. Advanced concepts are often needed and so lessons should be planned to teach these concepts. After the advanced concepts, we can begin to break these down into basic foundational concepts and this is where our lesson designs should begin.

During our lesson designs, we need to ask ourselves how we intend to evaluate our teaching. What assessments should we be using for each concept we are teaching? How long should we spend focusing on each concept? What additional tools or resources can we include with these lessons?

If we can do this, we can create a system of design where we often do not forget to include anything that is necessary to reach our end goals for our class.

Backwards design is the process of understanding what the end goal is for students and working backwards to see what is the most effective way getting them there.
Step one starts with identify what standards need to be met and what skills need to be achieved to meet the standards.
Step 2 is to look for ways to evaluate students understanding of concepts. Find ways that students will be assessed during this process and how can we check to see if they have mastered skills needed.
Step 3 is finally to design a lesson in which you will bring students to this end goal. What is the road map you will use to help students reach understanding.
