Elas liberam para a atmosfera o gás dimetil-sulfeto (DMS), responsável pela formação das nuvens e por grande parte da produção de oxigênio do planeta, afinal de contas, 71% da sua superfície é coberta por água e nesses ambientes normalmente são encontradas as algas. Uma das diferenças entre esses dois grupos está no fato de que as plantas possuem clorofila, uma característica ausente nos fungos. Existem mais de 100.000 espécies de fungos descritas, e especialistas acreditam que mais de 1000 são descobertas a cada ano.<br><br>Essas espécies apresentam papel ecológico importante, atuando, por exemplo, com bactérias, no processo de decomposição. Além disso, algumas apresentam grande potencial econômico, e outras são responsáveis por desencadear doenças no nosso corpo.          <description><![CDATA[<br> Reino Vegetal (Plantae, Metaphyta ou Vegetabilia) é composto por seres vivos eucariontes e autótrofos – que produzem o próprio alimento. As plantas, representantes desse reino, possuem diversos tamanhos, que vão desde os pequenos musgos até as gigantes sequoias. <br><br>Há cerca de 1200 milhões de anos, camadas de algas originaram os primeiros organismos do Reino Vegetal. Em função da característica evolutiva desses seres vivos, as plantas terrestres, surgiram por volta de 450 milhões de anos atrás, evoluídas das algas. <br><br>Para conquistarem o novo ambiente, as plantas precisaram se adaptar às suas novas condições de vida. Assim, desenvolveram vasos condutores de seiva – estrutura que garante a distribuição das seivas bruta. <br><br>No meio do período Devoniano (416 – 359 milhões de anos), as plantas já possuíam estruturas comuns às modernas como raízes, folhas e madeira secundária.
