In the past, famous artists like Van Gogh who had gone mainstream only had the option of painting as a way to express their emotions. Using Van Gogh's case of suicide, conspiracies claim that Van Gogh painted his own suicide - which means that painting could have been his only form of therapy. As society advances, naturally the norms would lean towards the advanced - which is photography. It is easy, accessible, and emotions are easily readable through filters and editing. 
However, if I had to take a stand from a first-person's point of view, I'd say that people nowadays do prefer photography due to accessibility. But, bare in mind that accessibility does not equal authenticity. In the past, teens only could find out about things that happened around the world by reading physical newspapers. Now, with the use of social media, teens can simply just scroll through their social media feeds to keep up with current affairs. Eg. mothership, straits times. The posts on social media are more appealing to read more about as they are already summarized and includes more pictures. In the past, photography is less popular since there is very little access to good equipments. These day people prefer photography since it is more convenient and saves time.
