He was best known for his novel Lord of the Flies that was published in 1954. He then would go on to publish another eleven novels in his lifetime. In 1980, Golding was awarded the Booker Prize for Rites of Passage. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983. As a result of his contributions to literature, Golding was knighted in 1988. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and in 2008, the national newspaper "The Times" ranked William Golding third on their list "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
