• Darcy sacrifices his pride and dignity to follow his true feelings. At the first ball, Darcy says that Elizabeth is not very handsome, especially for a man like him.

• Darcy gives up his most defining characteristic, his social standing, to be with Elizabeth. One way Darcy does this is by paying Wickham to marry Lydia in order to not make the Bennett's look bad.

• Lady Catherine invites Elizabeth to her home for dinner in hopes of learning about the new woman her cousin had attempted to marry. Elizabeth is rude and abrasive in her responses making a mockery of Lady Catherine's title and rank in society and disgracing the de Bourgh name. Lady Catherine, however, remains calm and collected while deflecting these remarks, showing her patient nature and respect for those less fortunate than she

• Goes to show the reflection of society Austen viewed at the time that the aristocracy was there to help and aid in times of trouble and willing to open their homes in assistance; however, they would not tolerate being taken advantage of as we see when Lady Catherine confronts Elizabeth about stealing away her nephew and ruining the Darcy name

Mr. Darcy sacrifices his money to attempt to save the Bennett's name which goes against society's expectations of an upper class man.

Even though Lady Catherine has planned their marriage, Mr. Darcy rejects stability of the Darcy reputation in order to marry Lizzy.

Paragraph One: Blame and Guilt

• In the past, Wickham and Darcy's younger sister were engaged, which would've resulted in an awful marriage.

• Darcy prevented this marriage from taking place, but did not tell anyone due to the fear that it would impact his reputation.

• He blames himself for not informing the public of Wickham's misdeeds and "allowing" this marriage to take place.

• To alleviate any additional stressors, he negotiates with Wickham, pays for the wedding, and disappears into the woodwork -- only reappearing when Mr. Gardiner informs Elizabeth of what really happened.

Paragraph Two: Love

• Elizabeth Bennet has previously attacked his character, accusing him of only caring for himself.

• Mr. Darcy has also criticized Elizabeth for her idiotic family (his words) and inferior birth

• By giving away such a large amount of money to preserve the very reputation he's mocked, he demonstrates growth as a person

Overall Theme: Love and guilt can lead a person to do drastic things.

Body 1: Rejects Mr. Collins and Mr. Darcy because of her dislike of them as individuals, despite their financial prospects.

Body 2: She is eventually rewarded, as she finds out about Darcy's true character, and ends up in a marriage that is both loving and endlessly wealthy. This shows that the book is giving a message in support of seeking love and respect.

Paragraph One

• After Elizabeth unceremoniously rejects Mr. Darcy's first offer of his hand in marriage, Mr. Darcy realizes his pride has blinded his judgement.

• When he hears about Lydia's elopement to the same man who nearly eloped with his younger sister, he feels shame that, if it weren't for his pride, he could have prevented the Bennet family from going through the same pain.

• Darcy, putting his pride aside, follows a man he never wished to see again to London and pays him for the sake of another family.

• Rather than brag about his achievement Darcy does not share what he had done to the Bennet family. Elizabeth only figures out through her aunt and uncle what he had done.

• Darcy put his own reputation and a year's worth of income on the side for the sake of another family's reputation.

• He does not hang the information over Elizabeth's head or use it to his advantage. Instead, Elizabeth recognizes his act of kindness and his sacrifice of pride by marrying Darcy.
