First and foremost, vegetarians do not eat meat whatsoever. This is pretty simple in hindsight, but when trying to find places to eat it can become a challenge. A different form of this is the pescatarian diet where you only eat fish and shellfish but no other meat. When on the vegetarianism diet you can still consume dairy products, if not, this is considered veganism where you do not have any bypass products from animals. For example, milk, eggs, yogurt, leather..etc.

The main area of concern is protein, but there is protein in so many vegetables that you can still get your daily intake. Knowing what foods, you can swap with meat is important because this will make sure that you are getting your protein. A good substitute is tofu! All though there are mixed reviews about it, when cooked correctly, you can barey notice the difference.

Tip: Try sofritas at Chipotle it is made with tofu.

“Protein in Vegetables vs Meat Chart - Google Search | Team Fitness in 2019 | Pinterest | Food, Protein Foods and Protein.” Pinterest, Pinterest, 14 Jan. 2019

Vitamin B12 occurs naturally in meat and dairy products which is where most people get it from. When you stop eating meat there is a chance your body will not receive enough, but this is an important vitamin because it gives you energy, so be mindful of your daily intake to ensure you are getting enough.

Once you have decided to start the vegetarian diet you will have to have a game plan. There are two ways to start, you can pick a specific date, or you can gradually eat less meat until you do not eat any at all. A key component into making the transition easier is to eat at home first and figure out recipes you like. Next you will have to find vegetarian options at restaurants. When eating out (especially with the vegetarian diet becoming more common) there are many more options that are readily available.

As mentioned before one of the main substitutes for meat is Tofu. This is a great source of protein but be cautious since it is high in soy. Another great substitute is Tempeh which is similar, but it made with soybeans to build the texture. Otherwise there are plenty of veggie burgers, veggie hot dogs, and other vegetable replacements.

“Kroger Invests in Meat Substitute as Alternatives Gain Ground.” SmartBrief, 3 Aug. 2017

This is to ensure that you are still eating healthy and not just eating random non-meat items.
