I often pair Google Forms and Google Sheets to help me gather, sort, filter, and analyze learner data/information. Recently our entire Distributed Learning team used Google Forms to gather student input to help us narrow the focus of our various inquiry projects. Having it all compiled (and live) in a Google Sheet made it much easier for us to sift through all the responses and determine trends and themes across the data.

Video on how to view/export responses from Forms into Sheets:

For elementary, I haven't really found a useful way of using Sheets with my students - I have a couple of times and they seem to get overwhelmed (I was a big Excel fan with all the formulas... but that is lost on 10-12 year-olds!). For our grade 6 learning community, we have our own ILE and we use Google Forms for the students to select their tutorials. I use the data in sheets to create student rosters for all the teachers for those tutorials. I find that the 'hide' function is really useful to hide data that is not helpful (like the timestamp column for instance) and just parse out the data I want to create multiple rosters from the same Sheets file.

At SMS we use Google Sheets as booking calendars for our library learning commons, gym, and laptop carts. I got the idea from Michelle Harvey at KLO. Once users get past the hurdle of learning how to log in to their @learn accounts it makes adding, modifying and deleting bookings easy from any internet-connected device. At the beginning of each week I pop on and hide the previous week's rows so that users only see the current week and beyond. At the start of the next school year I'll delete all the bookings, reset the dates, and edit all of the holidays, school events, etc. so it's ready to roll for the new year.

We're also using a Sheet to share homework club attendance with staff. EAs record student names and the date they attended on the Sheet and a simple formula calculates the number of times the student attended.

One downside to Sheets shared from @learn accounts to "anyone at SD23" with the link is that students can open the sheet, too. We are preventing easy access by posting the link in My23 Portal > School > Staff Room. I put a link to that on our webpage, which is secure since students cannot gain access to Staff Room. After the initial access - requiring several clicks - staff can bookmark the calendar for quicker access. I'd like to find a way to share Google docs with staff only. :-)

Sheets is definitely my favourite and most-used app. My dayplan is a google sheet (http://bit.ly/mwdayplan). So is my grade book, my year plan, and all my unit plans with assessment matrices and rubrics. Recently I assigned a Google Form assessment to my learners, and it was fun to see all the data automatically fill into a sheet that I could view all at once.

My co-teachers and I use Words Their Way for word work in our classrooms, and we use a sheet to track and filter student progress in their word sorts.
Wendy Blancher Wow, Mark. Lots of work there! Thanks for letting us take a look! I have not really had the opportunity to use Google Sheets, but can really see how the dayplanner would be beneficial as it is so easy to share with parents and support teams. I have exported my data from forms to sheets, but I have found the information in the form adequate for my needs. I have never used excel spreadsheets either, so that might explain my reluctance somewhat. I am honestly still grappling with this one.

I have used Google Sheets for a few tasks in education: invoices, team lists and collecting Form data/responses. Some of our teachers are using an add-on for Sheets that gives them an enhanced gradebook. More of a traditional style gradebook, but gives some teachers the tools they are looking for: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gradebook-for-google-shee/gemkopljgkgplboijpanmegimckjncnc?hl=en

It has been a great tool for us for tracking and sharing this with coaches and anyone else that needs this information. I have also started to use Sheets as a planning tool for the year.
