Great to hear from you. So glad to hear that the trip was impactful - we loved working with you and your team, and was so much was achieved during that week. 

I will get all this information to you. I just need to ask a few questions as I just know the lady as "Bibi Mandazi" - "Granny Doughnut"! 

She has really struggled over the years, but thanks to Nord Anglia and SWTz's help, her recent years have been a lot easier.

I'll find out her real name and get back to you with answers.

I met briefly with "Bibi Mandazi"'s daughter this morning. 

Bibi's name is Elizabeth Shambani. (Shambani means "in the field"). 

She is 85+ years old and has 7 children of her own. At least one of her children has died, and one ran away leaving their children behind. Others are poorly educated and unable to find meaningful work and therefore not able to give her much assistance. Some live far away. Her husband died many years ago. 

Bibi has 3 grandchildren living with her and she supports them with help from Seeway/Nord Anglia (together we pay school fees for her grandchildren to attend a local primary school). 

She has been making doughnuts for at least 45 years - one of our neighbours now in his 50s remembers eating her doughnuts when he was a child!

Basically her problems are due to poverty, and having to support small children at an elderly age. She suffers from arthritis and sometimes her daughter (who lives close by), makes the doughnuts instead as she is too unwell to cook. 

This Nord Anglia season we have been raising extra money for her by selling her doughnuts to the Nord Anglia students, who have been very generous and given additional money to help her. She had started building a small house, and had managed to get the foundation and walls built. 

The extra money we have raised from doughnuts has enabled her to put on the roof, and buy and install doors and windows. Her current house is in bad repair and will probably not survive the imminent rainy season so she needs to be out of there as fast as possible - hopefully by next week she will be able to move in. 

I wish I had more information, but sometimes it is very hard to really understand what is happening within families here!!



Friday

Today we went to visit Bibi's house. And we realised yes, there is more we can do. We have been able to buy the window frames and front door and install them but she still needs glass in the windows, and she also has a small room to use as a toilet, and has had a septic pit dug, but she still needs the actual toilet and plumbing to reach the pit. 

I took some photos of her, the new house, her old house, and also the goat shed we built her 4 years ago. Also, we built her a small wooden kitchen 4 years ago, so she could cook her doughnuts under cover rather than outside as she was doing before.

The glass and toilet will probably be quite cheap - I need to get a price from the builder...maybe a couple of hundred $US or so. 

Would this be something the boys would be interested in fundraising for? 

I'll get a more accurate quote for you as soon as possible.
