Please Read This Entry What are your impressions of school so far? What are your thoughts about the fires and the smoke? Have you been impacted directly or indirectly? How so?

School so far feels a bit tough. I just find it hard to sit in my room all day in front of a screen. I wish that we could socialize with friends in class, but having online meets makes that difficult. Also, it's hard to use Canvas because I haven't gotten used today. At least this year is more organized than last year. I think that it's really dumb how people started a whole wildfire for no reason. Because of them, many families had to leave there homes and watch them burn down. I feel bad because families didn't do anything wrong to have their homes destroyed. I wish that there was something that I could do to help them. It makes me sad to see other people sad It sucked for me because the. smoke prevented me from playing basketball, but I'm grateful that my house isn't burnt down. Sometimes we have to be grateful for everything that we have because some people aren't as lucky as us.

Reflect on summer. What Reflect on summer. What were some of the simple pleasures you enjoyed over summer and go into detail about one or more. Or maybe there was a trip or an adventure or you changed somehow? Reflect on the pandemic and how you have had to adapt your lifestyle. What do you miss? What new skills have you learned? What have you learned about yourself?

The summer wasn't actually that bad for me. I got to hang out with many friends and I went on multiple trips. My favorite memory from the summer was when I went to Newport with my best friend. We went to the beach and visited the lighthouse there. The car ride was about two hours and thirty minutes. Honestly, the car ride wasn't that bad. I remember on the way home we fell asleep in the car because of how exhausted we were. The pandemic is horrible. It has changed my life so much. Everywhere is closed and if it's open we have to stay six feet away from everyone else. We also have to always have a mask on and it's so uncomfortable. Because of the pandemic, I have to have school online which sucks for me because I can't socialize and I'm still stuck in my room. I miss school and being able to go out and not wear a mask. Well, due to the virus, I found out that my friends mean a lot to me and that it's hard to live without them.

How do gender, race, ability, and class issues shape the way we view others and interact with others in the larger world? Think locally and globally. Consider each of these separately. Which one affects you more? How so?

I believe that everyone is very biased. I feel like when people are meeting someone that isn't the same gender as them or isn't the same race or anything like that, they start to act different. They start to try and act like what they think the other person would act like, and most of the time they're predictions are way off. Race affects me the most because I am an Asian going to a dominantly White school. I feel like people are very stereotypical, as in, people think that I'm smart just because I'm Asian or that I can't drive because I'm Asian.

In your journal, write a setting for a place that is familiar to you. Be sure to use sensory detail, like Steinbeck, to bring your setting to life. It could be indoors or outdoors.

The door squeaks as you enter my room. The second you step in you're hit by the scent of lavender. Looking around, the walls are divided up into triangles that are painted different shades of grey. The furniture is mostly black with some hints of blue and white. Right next to the door there is a leaning shelf with a whole bunch of things that represent me like books, art, and just the small things that I like. There is also a tv on the wall facing my navy blue queen sized bed.

In your journal, write about the theme of friendship. Write about a particular friend. Describe this person, what he/she/they mean to you, why he/she/they are a friend. Or, write about friendship in general, what is most important in a friendship? When were you a good friend, or when was someone a good friend to you?

It's tough to choose the most important thing in a friendship. There are many things in a friendship that's important. For starters, I believed that a good friend is someone who is there for you, someone who supports you. Good friends don't judge you for who you are. They're supposed to support you and boost your confidence. Good friends should be open to each other. Good friends shouldn't feel embarrassed to share things. They also shouldn't feel pressured to do things.

John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men as a social commentary. What do you suppose he would write about if he were to come to Portland at this time? What would you write about? What approach would you take in writing it (Genre, Topic, Audience)?

I feel like Steinbeck would write about all of the chaos in Portland, all of the riots and protests. If I had the choice I would write about the protests in Portland. I would want to have two main characters that would be enemies in a way. Where one is a protester and the other is a police officer. I would like to give the audience a chance to look at both sides of the story. I would show people how crazy our society is in the twenty first century. I would also add the fact that there's a virus spreading around.

IB Learner Trait - Caring

I believe that journal entry #1 is an example of this trait because it displays the empathy that I show to others that are in need. In that entry, I talk about how I wish that I could somehow help the people who's houses burned down. I just want to help people. Seeing others happy makes me happy. So that's why journal entry #1 represents caring.
