The author, Lahiri, shows the meaning of light and dark which contributes to the atmosphere throughout the story. Lahiri creates a dark atmosphere where the characters are exposing their dark secrets to the light.  The electricity goes out for an hour as a sign of darkness and the secrets they share during this timeframe. Once the light turns back on the secrets are being exposed to this light source.
