He was determined to send his letter that was going to Mariana, so she would definitely get it. In the story, it says "he finally discovered his new mission, when his letter reached Mariana's hands" (Luisa Valenzuela, 92-93.) This shows a strong bond between Juan and Mariana, because it tells how devoted Juan is to getting something meaningful to his loved one. One of them occurs when Brille is mistreated by Hannetje, and then he realizes that Brille too has a family and kids. At first, these two hated each other, but then they realized that they both have something in common, which is that they both have to come back to their families. Being that both of them are dads, they can share a relationship through that, and connect just from that feature. Henry, Della and Jim both care for each other so much and want to get the other person a gift to show it. In order to get the gift, they have to give up one valuable thing of their own to afford the gift. In the end, they both end up giving away the thing that the gift is used for. This shows the bond they have for each other because they both are willing to give up something valuable to make the other one happy. They care enough about each other that they both are willing to sacrifice for the sake of the other one.
