Thrym had stolen Thor's hammer and would not return unless he was granted Freya's hand in marriage. Freya had declined the offer because she would not dare be unfaithful to her own husband. So Thor dressed up in a wedding dress, pretending to be Freya, and married Thrym, who did not question how she looked and acted like a man. It only made Thrym fall more in love. This shows how men have a preference toward their women, which is a more dominant, strong woman, more manly because they want someone that is able to fight, and endure the harsh environment they live in.

To them, winter probably isn't the nicest weather they'd like to live in, so it's looked down upon as if it's bad. In the story, they have turned the cold and icy weather into this evil creature doing bad deeds.

In Scandinavia, they are accustomed to the cold and harsh winters every year. They know the ins and outs of the climate they've grown up in, and this effects the myths and stories that arise from their culture. Because their winters are full of cold and ice, it's bound to take place in most parts of their lives, including a creature of evil that appears often in Norse myth: The Frost Giant, which are creatures that are relatively made of ice.
