Many fights and revolts broke out all  around the continent.  Then the document called "Plan of Iguala" stating that todays Mexico has independence. After the "Plan of Iguala" arrived in Guatemala people gathered around the National Palace of Guatemala , shouting for independence. The drive to independence began when Napoleon's brother took over Spain and as well as other revolutions in Latin America. During this time many Latin American's benefited the Kingdom of Spain and Costa Rica was no different. Over time people in Latin America became tired of the arrangement. It all began after Napoleon invaded Spain and disposed of the ruling family. José Miguel Carrera, was a leader in the early struggle for the independence of Chile.

Chile first declared independence in 1810 ,but due to instability the Spanish rule was reestablished. People in Chile were upset at this and began a war.  The biggest turning point was when San Martin won the Battle of Maipu on April 5, 1818. Still the fighting continued until 1814.

The war went on for 4 years. They were also involved in other wars such as The Ten Years' War that went from 1866- 1876, and The Little War which went for only a year (1879-1880). Though these are important to history the most important was the Cuban War of Independence. After Spain was defeated by America and Cuba , thus giving Cuba independence.
