Nativism was a movement based on hostility towards immigrants and it was motivated by ethnic tensions and religious bias. The Industrial Revolution was a movement where machines changed people's way of life as well as their methods of manufacture. This led to the creation of factories which constantly needed a source of cheap labor. Therefore competition amongst groups for jobs eventually led to the favoring of immigrants since they would work for cheaper wages. Since many were willing to work, employers could set very low wages. People worked fourteen to sixteen hours a day for six days a week. Factory working conditions were terrible for the workers' health. The only light present was the sunlight that came through the windows, machines spit out smoke, and many machines did not have safety precautions which resulted in many accidents.
