Nativism and the Industrial Revolution were two of the most important factors that contributed to negative stigma surrounding immigration. Nativism was a movement based on hostility towards immigrants and it was motivated by ethnic tensions and religious bias. The Industrial Revolution was a movement where machines changed people's way of life as well as their methods of manufacture. This led to the creation of factories which constantly needed a source of cheap labor. Therefore competition amongst groups for jobs eventually led to the favoring of immigrants since they would work for cheaper wages. This eventually caused immigrants to be discriminated against.

The frontier theory is the argument that American democracy was formed by the western frontier. This theory does not have as much to do with immigration as nativism does, which was a movement that was directly related to immigration and influenced hostility towards immigrants.

Although throughout America's history immigrants have been largely looked down upon by "nativists" or natural born residents, a piece of evidence that contradicts this apparent hostility is the Immigration Act of 1990. This act increased overall immigration to allow 700,000 immigrants to come to the U.S. per year and it provided family based immigration visas, five distinct employment based visas, as well as the diversity visa program.

The Industrial Revolution had many effects on the working class. Since many were willing to work, employers could set very low wages. People worked fourteen to sixteen hours a day for six days a week. Factory working conditions were terrible for the workers' health. The only light present was the sunlight that came through the windows, machines spit out smoke, and many machines did not have safety precautions which resulted in many accidents. This led to Labor Unions which were formed to put a stop to long hours with little pay and bad working conditions.

During the industrial revolution women often worked in unsafe and unsanitary working conditions since factory work was not initially regulated by the government. Women could work in mill towns, textile factories, and other factory jobs. Because of industrialization, many women left their homes and began to live independently. This allowed them to become involved in organizations such as labor unions. In addition, industrialization allowed many women to make enough money by working to provide for themselves and their families.

The middle class was composed of businessmen and other professionals. The larger the Industrial Revolution grew, the more powerful these individuals became. Individuals and groups formed new libraries, schools, and universities because there was a sudden need for education. The middle class had better food and housing, which led to fewer diseases and longer living individuals among these groups. Since these classes were treated so well, their population grew and thus had minimal difficulty living during the Industrial Revolution.
