The magnetic effect of an electric current, also known as electromagnetism, is a fundamental principle in physics discovered by Hans Christian Ørsted in 1820. He observed that a compass needle deflected when placed near a current-carrying wire, indicating the presence of a magnetic field generated by the electric current. This discovery showed that electricity and magnetism are closely related.

When an electric current flows through a conductor, such as a wire, it produces a magnetic field around it. The direction of this magnetic field can be determined using the right-hand rule: if you point the thumb of your right hand in the direction of the current, your curled fingers show the direction of the magnetic field lines. The strength of this magnetic field depends on the magnitude of the current and the distance from the wire.

This principle is used in many practical applications. For example, in electromagnets, a coil of wire (called a solenoid) is wound around a soft iron core. When current passes through the coil, it creates a strong magnetic field that magnetizes the iron core. Electromagnets are used in electric bells, relays, motors, and various industrial machines.

The magnetic effect of current is also the working principle behind electric motors and generators. In motors, electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy through magnetic interaction. In generators, mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy using magnetic fields. This interaction between electricity and magnetism forms the basis of modern electromechanical technology and is essential in daily life.

The magnetic effect of an electric current, discovered by Ørsted in 1820, shows that a current-carrying wire generates a magnetic field around it. This field’s direction is given by the right-hand rule. The strength of the field depends on the current and distance from the wire. Coiling the wire into a solenoid and using a soft iron core creates an electromagnet, which is used in devices like electric bells, motors, and relays. This principle forms the basis of electric motors and generators, enabling the conversion between electrical and mechanical energy, and is essential in modern electrical technology.

When an electric current is passed through certain chemical solutions, it can be used to extract metals—a process known as electrolysis. This method is also used in electroplating, where a thin layer of metals like gold, silver, or copper is coated onto objects such as surgical instruments to reduce corrosion and prevent infections, ensuring they remain clean and safe for repeated use. Additionally, medical implants like those for hips and knees are often electroplated to make them strong, durable, and suitable for use in the human body.

An electric current has an effect on magnets, and when an electric charge flows through a compass, the needle in the compass is deflected. When an electric current passes through a coil of wire, a temporary magnet is formed, know as a electromagnet. To increase the strength of the electromagnet, a iron core can be inserted. Magnetic resonance imaging makes use of electromagnets to generate images of soft tissues in the body.

Effects of Electricity

There are for effects of electricity. They are chemical effects, heating effects, magnetic effects and harmful effects.

The chemical effects of electricity is when a chemical reaction happens when and electric current is passed through certain chemical solutions or liquids. We make use of this effect for the extraction of metals, or for electroplating an object with a thin layer of metal. This is commonly done to coat medical instruments or for coating implants.

The heating effects of electricity is when electrical current is passed through a heating element. The heating element usually consists of a wire made of a high-resistance material. This effect is are used for toasters hairdryers and incubators.

The magnetic effect of electricity is when electrical current is passed through metals which magnetizes the metal. This can be observed by dropping a magnet through a copper tube as the magnet passes the copper tube, electrical current is created magnetizing the copper tube which slows the descent of the magnet. This effect is used in MRI machines.

The harmful effects of electricity are electrical fires and electric shocks. Electrical fires happen when the power supply is overloaded, this cases excessive heat which can cause fires. Electric shock happens when electricity flows through the body causing injury or death.

It's also used for infant incubators when a baby is born prematurely or unwell and might not be able to regulate it's own body temperature. The heating element in the incubator keeps the temperature in the incubator constant until the baby can regulate it's own body temperature.

It's also used for keeping medical instruments sterile by using the heating element to produce steam at high pressure.
