Explain overarching connected themes in lesson plan

The connected learning theme in this lesson plan was peer supported learning. In this lesson students would begin their Padlets independently, but eventually share them with a small group. Students would be able to comment on other people's posts and ask them questions about their readings. This would allow students to engage in online discussion, offer support and suggestions, and improve their writing skills. This lesson also aligns with interest driven learning because students are choosing a fiction text that is of interest to them. Students will have the opportunity to find a book that is interesting to them from the school or classroom library.

Reflection of Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is something that I want to do in my classroom with my sixth grade students. Currently when we read students have all different ways of jotting down their notes. Some students like to use their iPad, others like to use Post-it Notes, and others use their ELA notebook. I think using a Padlet would help students keep their notes organized and also keep them engaged because they love to do anything that involves an iPad. Something that would be challenging would be the days that kids forget their iPads at home or do not bring their iPads to class. This could be challenging because students may not want to take paper notes when all their other notes are on their iPads.
I think using the digital tool would also let them see work that their peers are doing and interact through online discussions. Students would practice typing questions and responses to others during the class. Students would also be reminded to put enough detail in their notes so that their partner can understand what they are thinking. I think using an online tool to share work could also help students who are struggling because they could look at peer examples of work.

References to reading.

When students engage in the Padlet online discussions and questions about their books it reminds me of the chapter in the CLC book where students engaged in blog writing and discussion. This is a tool that will allow students to write to teacher and communicate digitally. Another part of the readings that I had in mind while creating this lesson was from the TCL book and the critical literacy ideas. When students engage in this lesson they will be taught about authors purpose and why an author choose to develop a central idea and what their reason was.
