1. Showbie allows teachers to give spoken feedback on assessments on all platforms. This is a great tool for giving feedback on specific strengths and areas of improvement for an essay. Watch this video for more information.
2. Edpuzzle allows teachers to insert questions into a video to check comprehension. If a science teacher assigned a video to teach students about photosynthesis, they could use this tool assess comprehension throughout different stages of the video. Watch this video for more information.
3. Google Forms is a useful tool for formative assessments. It allows teacher to assign answers, points and feedback to questions so that students can receive immediate feedback. This would be a good option for a maths teacher who has assigned a weaker student further practice for a particular skill. Watch this video for more information.
4. Parlay allows teacher to set up online discussions, which can be used for assessment. Teachers can use multimedia as prompts for a discussion and provide students with sentence stems. This would be good for an ELA support class as teachers can provide students with language support for discussions Watch this video to learn more.
5. Google Sites allows students to create a portfolio or collaborate on a single idea. This is an effective tool for group projects. For example, a social studies teacher might have a group of students create a Google site to explain detail life in the trenches during WW1. Watch this video for more information.
6. Turnitin Students can upload essays to this platform and it will inform the teacher of any plagiarism from the internet or amongst students, as well as grammatical mistakes. Teachers can also offer feedback here regarding the assignment. This is perfect for an English teacher who has assigned an essay to analyze a text studied in class. Watch this video for more information.
7. The rubric function on Google Classroom allows teachers to share their rubrics with students before an assessment. Then, they can easily grade student work by clicking the criteria that students met on the rubric. By doing this, the platform will generate a grade and a highlighted rubric will be sent to each student for feedback. Watch this video for more information.
8. Nearpod is a platform that allows teachers to make media more interactive. Teachers can insert multiple-choice or open-ended questions into a video or set of slides to assess student understanding. For example, a history teacher might create an interactive video to check that students are understanding the cause and effect between different moments in in a specific historical event. Watch this video for more information.
9. Kaizena is a powerful feedback tool that allows teacher to give spoken feedback to students and comment upon their work. Additionally, teachers and students can track feedback over time to measure progress. This would be well utilized if a teacher was working with a student that was struggling with a specific skill, such as concision in their writing. This app would allow the student to collate all the teacher's feedback and reflect on their progress throughout the school year. Watch this video for more information.
10. Kahoot is great for formative assessment. It utilizes technology and game-based learning so that a teacher can check how well a class as understood a topic via a quiz.

1) Ozobot is a fantastic tool for teaching coding. The beauty of this device is that learners of all ages can learn to code using only paper, markers, and the device. Simply draw the code, and let the robot bring it to life! It does not require any other technology to operate in the classroom. This makes the device quite accesible for schools/classrooms that otherwise do not have a well-developed technology infrastructure/resource. This is a popular device in schools with a Maker Space. Check out this review from Common Sense Media.

3) 3Doodler is a great tool for classrooms/schools without the budget for a 3D printer. This device allows learners to draw 3D objects in the air! Furthermore, the handheld nature and simplicity of the device allows for use in classrooms where 3D printing technology would otherwise be developmentally too advanced. Several models are available with a target audience from Pre-K up through High School. This device is great for the arts, with possible use across other subject areas as well.

The ease of switching between source devices is quite convenient for a classroom environment. This device can be used across subjects and age levels. Similar products are offered by other tech companies for non iOS/Apple classrooms.

4) Google Cardboard provides an affordable alternative for virtual reality. The design is a simple, cardboard VR headset that works with most mobile phones. With Google Cardboard, learners and teachers can access a variety of virtual reality experiences and field trips. I personally have used this with 5th graders to explore the inner workings of a beehive. This tool does not have any specific system/platform requirements and can be tailored for any age group or subject.

As part of the Apple "ecosystem" of products, iPads work seamlessly with MacBooks and AppleTV. Essentially, Mindstorms is a guided build robotics program. Furthermore, Mindstorms provides a variety of workshops and educational training for using the kits.

8) Google Chromebook works seamlessly with the Google Suite for Education. This device has become the standard for school-provided technology, particularly during online learning. Essentially functioning as a "light" laptop, a variety of educational programs and resources can be loaded easily through Google Chrome. As with iPad, Chromebook has the ability for "push" updates and applications from a network administrator. Primarily used by Elementary and Middle School students, as a standard laptop is often deemed more appropriate for High School students.

These are in reverse alphabetical order (It's a start)
Zoom is a video conferencing tool that was well known before the lockdown but became so popular after the lock-down that it struggled to keep up. It is also used by many schools from KG to Colleges. It has plenty of functions for online teaching (though not designed specifically for that) such as managing student input, private chat, screen sharing etc. Free for 121, and group meetings. Available on PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Free for meetings of up to 40 minutes, premium plans US$ 15-20 a month per host.
WeChat (微信）Is a communication tool that is a must-have in China (and soon banned in the US). All of my parents and many of my students use this. It allows you to communicate 121 or in groups, transfer files and videos back and forth easily, send text and voice messages as well as video messages. It is not designed specifically for the classroom, but in China it's great because everyone has it. It has a lot of additional functions that may be useful in a school setting, all of which are explained in more detail in a PPT I made recently. Available on PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Free.
Skype is another IM/comm tool that is great for group or 121 communication. It has all the fundamental IM functionality, but I would bring up two extras - one, it has live subtitles (although it's not perfect it's great for ESL learners) and it's closely integrated with Office 365, so that students can use it for comments, feedback and such when collaborating. Available on PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Free for intra-platform communication, has subscriptions for phone calls.
Reading A-Z is a leveled reading platform with a library of thousands of books ranging from the lowest level (aa) all the way to high school (Z2). It has books in English and also other languages (Vietnamese, Spanish, Ukrainian etc) and its focus is on teaching/learning reading. For communication, students can record their readings, take assessment tests, and get feedback on their recordings. It also has parent access so that parents can get an overview of how their child is doing. As a web-based platform, it’s available on any device that has a decent browser. Free for students, costs about US$ 100 a year per class of up to 35 students.
QQ is another IM/Communication tool that is popular in China (and claims billions of users around the world - one would be wise to doubt that). It’s made by the same company as WeChat. It has all the fundamental IM functionality, but it has additional education-related functions such as giving/assigning/providing feedback on homework. It was used in China during the lock-down in the majority of schools. Available on PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Free.
ManageBac is an IB-focused learning management system (LMS) for planning, assessment and reporting. As such, it has way too many functions to be covered here. However, it has a very robust functionality for teacher-parent, school-parents and teacher-student communication. When used properly, both students and parents have access to lesson plans, assignments, reports and more. Students can view videos, assignments, materials, homework and get feedback on the work they have done. Parents also have access to all information relevant to their child. It’s available for all across the IB curriculum (Primary. Secondary, Diploma and Career). Its IB focus makes it tricky to be used in a non-IB school, but it can be done. As a web-based platform, it’s available on any device that has a decent browser. School pays through the nose, free for everyone else.
iMessage is the Cupertino IM/comm app. It has all the fundamental IM platform functionality. It works on the apple ecosystem, and it’s integrated with Apple software. Unfortunately it doesn’t have much in the way of education-specific functionality, but for those who are most familiar with iOS or already using it, it’s a decent choice. Available on Mac, and iOS. Free.
ClassDojo is a learning management platform specifically focused on classroom management, but it has continuously added more functionalities. It has been a teachers’ favorite for years. For communication it has several functions. It has Class Story for teachers to communicate with the whole class as well as parents(about what has happened in the class. It also has portfolios for students to complete activities and share work with teachers and their parents. It has parent access so they can see how their child is doing in the class, and it provides a direct line of communication with the teacher as well. It has a translation feature for the parents who are not that good at English. Has apps for iOS and Android. As a web-based platform, it’s available on any device that has a decent browser. Free for school-related use, ClassDojo Beyond School is $US 60 a year for parents.
Here’s a good list of 11 platforms/tools for parent-students-teacher-school communication (this list includes ClassDojo, so 10 additional ones)
