1-The lesson is that even in the worst of circumstances,
people have the power within themselves to hold onto
hope and the promise of freedom. This lesson would have
been critical for enslaved people as they dreamed about
rising above their hardships.

2. Slaves suffered with sickness on the ships to America.
At the plantations, they did back-breaking work all day.
Cruel men watched them, and the Driver whipped them
when they slowed down, even while some carried hungry
infants.
4- Examples of dialect: Say that; climbin’, flappin’; Too
crowded, don’t you know. Use of dialect establishes the
narrator’s voice as a storyteller from the times of slavery.

5. The Master was a “hard lump of clay. A hard glinty coal.
A hard rock pile.” The whip was “a slice-open cut of
pain.” These comparisons are vivid, helping the reader
experience the unfeeling, immovable Master and the
hurtful whip.
