In all of the Guest mentor videos, I loved that it was obvious how much they each loved to teach/help students! Getting students excited about learning starts with the teacher! Parents and caregivers can introduce the concept of learning but if a student has a terrible year in school, at any age, it can be difficult to bring out the excitement again. Our guest mentors gave so many great ideas to keep students involved and excited. I love the idea of word walls, collaboration, embracing the mess in the classroom and explicit small group instruction.

Many books were mentioned this semester that I found interesting. How Do You Hug a Porcupine? is a great reference when you feel frustrated as a teacher. We all have bad days once in awhile, having resources to combat those days is critical. T.J. Ulmer mentioned the Culture Code as a resource that I saved in my file, as well. Exit tickets were common use for our guest mentors. It really lets students show us what they know. Small groups were also common so that teachers can observe students and answer questions they may have, that cannot be addressed in a large group setting. It helps students feel like they are heard and seen.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching the mentor videos. As teachers, we should never stop learning. I believe it is a life-long process. Every year students change, strategies are developed and new assessment tools are created. To help our students excel in their future, we need to make sure that we have the tools to help them.
