If you miss someone, he or she is just a tap away: this is one of the great things technology has brought to us. Through technology, we can be in places or be with people we wanted to be with, although not physically, so how can Sherry Turkle say "[technology takes] us to places we don't want to go."

For one, technology lets people present themselves in their best versions. This is particularly a good thing— good for impressing people and society. We can make ourselves seem more desirable and more admirable, but having to change yourself into someone you are not, that is one of the places Turkle has mentioned we do not want to be in. If we continue to use technology dumbly, then we are doomed to a world where we do not know what truth is for people will be able to customize their lives. The world we are entering will be in total chaos.

Sherry Turkle particularly said, at least implicitly, that we are already living in one customized world. People deal with things that should be done personally, virtually. Board meetings, for example, are done online, through Skype or through Facetime. People do it because they only want to "pay attention on the bits that interest [them]." Another thing she mentioned, which saddens me the most for I particularly relate, "parents text and do email at breakfast and at dinner while their children complain about not having their parents’ full attention."

Technology may have given us the opportunity to be connected with others but it ends there— I reckon it will be more terrible if we abuse it more than we are doing now. People use their "sociable robots" to connect even if they are already face-to-face. Technology was meant to improve conversation but it only made people, exposed to it, drop their skills to mere connection.

Perhaps, if we just put down our phones when we are around people and do a real conversation, we can make relationships more than a mere connection. Let us not stick to regressive connection: conversation turns into connection which turns into being alone and finally to being isolated.

Technology, if used wisely, will guide us to "[making] this life a life we can love."
