I think the main topics would be writing/words and mortality/death. I think the theme is that everyone is mortal and will die. It is very dark but it is shown so often throughout the book and about everyone actually ends up dying.

The main girl, Liesel, is taken to a foster home after her brother dies. She finds a book and slowly learns to read with her new father. She starts to steal books from other places because she loves them so much. Eventually, they hide a jewish man to keep him safe from the holocaust, which developes a new friendship between him and Liesel, but also brings the family more danger.

Topic and Theme Quotation

"It suffices to say that at some point I will be standing over you, as genially as possible. Your soul will be in my arms. A color will be perched on my shoulder. I will carry you gently away." (Zusak 4) This is said by the narrarator who is death. I think this definitely shows the topic and theme of mortality because it blatantly states that everyone will die.

The protagonist would be Liesel. She is interesting because she is very innocent in the beginning but she eventually learns more and more about the sadness of the real world, and the reader learns with her.

I liked that it was very real. It wasn't like a regular fairy tale with a happy ending. The author wasn't afraid to show how things happen in the real world. I think it is a good book if you are looking for something deeper and more dramatic than a regular story.
