For the first few weeks of learning German I really struggled with pronunciation, specifically the 'ch' sound in 'ich'. To ensure I did not continue to make this mistake I made a habit of recording myself speaking, which allowed me to go back and listen more objectively the mistakes I was making. Eventually, with a lot of repetition I started pronouncing a lot more sounds accurately. In addition, I have also struggled to consistently practise my German throughout the week before classes. Thus, I decided to revisit vocabulary on Quizlet for 20 minutes a day which has been invaluable.

This webpage has a variety of exercises which have easy, medium, and hard options, which allowed me to build up my confidence with each task. It also has lessons to go with the exercise which demonstrates different elements of German, such as personal pronouns or articles. After doing the exercises, which were useful practise for my grammar, I moved onto the examples which showed full sentences of what I had just been practising. This served as a good summary and reinforced what I had learnt.

This YouTube page has animated videos with songs aimed at young children for learning German. It offers a basic and easy to understand approach to German and is very useful for learning the basics. This video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_6QzHc2PPA&t=1405s)
was very useful as it was such a long video, compared to a lot of other shorter alphabet videos, it allowed me to fully remember the pronunciation for each letter in the alphabet as it was so repetitive. It also gives many examples for each letter which was useful in hearing how a letter sounds within different words. Repeating the pronunciation along with the video allowed me to reinforce what I had already learnt in class of the alphabet, which gave me a lot more confidence in pronunciation. I also looked at their video for learning numbers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qbkXiK1VsM), which wasn’t as useful as at the beginning it went too slow but then sped up much too fast to follow.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VowGvnRU_s
I didn’t completely understand cases after my class so I went online to clear up my confusion. I found this video which talks about the different cases in German in simple terms. This was very useful as it gave specific examples that allowed me to understand what I had learnt in class and how they functioned within a sentence. I realised I mostly understood nominative and accusative cases but the dative was still confusing me, which the video helped to clear up. To reinforce what I had learnt about all the cases, specifically the dative, I created a revision resource with examples. This was invaluable as everything clicked into place as I realised how the verb is what influences these cases, which I had failed to understand previously.

This resource uses a lot of audio activities to help learn German which was really useful at first as it was good to listen to native speakers as well as having a clear format that made tracking progress simple and easy to understand. However, as I continued using this it became clear that a lot of its resources are for premium users only, meaning that free users lack the ability to continue with in depth learning on the website, which was frustrating as the audio activities did not go far enough.

This website is similar to the busuu website but included videos as well as audio files. In each activity it shows a short clip of a native German speaker speaking a German word or phrase, which I had to then choose from a selection. This was good for initially learning how phrases sound and look, as some other resources tend to feature speakers that speak at a much slower rate to accommodate the English learner, whereas memrise features phrases at a conversational speaking rate. Although it does not feature in-depth grammar notes or learning, it is still a very useful resource if paired with separate grammar learning.

I wanted to learn some of the verbs I had learnt in class in their conjugated format so I firstly made a table of the first six verbs we had learnt with their conjugation and translation for each pronoun. After looking at this for a while to try and notice the differences with each pronoun, I made flashcards with the general verb and pronoun on one side, and its conjugated form and translation on the other. I then went through all the flashcards I had made until I felt much more confident with them. I will also, in the future, make the same resources for verbs that are irregular, which I feel will also be valuable.

I used this resource to reinforce what vocabulary I had already learnt as well as to add some new words to my vocab. This was very useful as it had different levels such as basic, intermediate and advanced, which helped me decide if I wanted to work on words I had already come across or to focus on some new, more complicated words. I aim to do this task for around 30 mins every day or every other day to keep these words fresh in my memory.
