Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) is a monumental statue and cultural park located in Bali, Indonesia, symbolizing the Hindu deity Vishnu riding the mythical bird Garuda. The statue represents a significant part of Balinese and Hindu mythology, where Garuda serves as Vishnu's loyal companion.

1. Mythological Background

In Hindu mythology, Garuda is a large, eagle-like bird known for his strength, courage, and loyalty. The myth of Garuda revolves around his heroic efforts to free his mother from servitude by retrieving the elixir of immortality, Amrita. In gratitude, Garuda becomes the mount of Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe in Hinduism.

2. Concept and Design

The idea for the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue was conceived by Balinese artist I Nyoman Nuarta in 1989, aiming to create a monumental representation of this important myth. The statue depicts Lord Vishnu riding Garuda, a symbol of protection and devotion. Originally intended to be 126 meters tall (including its pedestal), it was designed as a cultural symbol for Indonesia, highlighting the country’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

3. Construction and Challenges

Construction of the statue began in 1997, but it faced numerous delays due to financial and logistical challenges. The project resumed in earnest in the early 2000s, supported by both government and private funding. Built from copper and brass, the statue’s complex design required advanced engineering to ensure its structural integrity. After years of work, the statue was finally completed in 2018, standing 75 meters tall, making it one of the largest statues in the world.

4. Cultural and Touristic Significance

Garuda Wisnu Kencana has become a major cultural and tourist attraction in Bali. The statue is located within GWK Cultural Park, which hosts various cultural performances, art exhibitions, and festivals. It serves as a symbol of Balinese cultural pride and a reflection of Indonesia’s religious and artistic diversity.

Today, GWK not only attracts visitors for its architectural grandeur but also for its role in promoting Balinese culture and mythology on the global stage.
