Orion Nebula is a reflection nebula, like many of the nebulae around it (the flame nebula, horsehead nebula, etc.). It's filled with gas and "stardust." The gas clouds are only illuminated by the stars around the nebula. Inside the 24-lightyear wide nebula, there are young stars and possibly even stars being formed. Stars that are 30,000 years old are considered young. Think of it this way: our sun is middle aged at 4 billion years.
