The mask which concealed the visage was made so nearly to resemble the countenance of a stiffened corpse that the closest scrutiny must have had difficulty in detecting the cheat. And yet all this might have been endured, if not approved, by the mad revellers around. But the mummer had gone so far as to assume the type of the Red Death. His vesture was dabbled in blood --and his broad brow, with all the features of the face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror.

In The Masquer of the Red Death the whole story revolves around the idea of escaping death, in this for the Red Death, throughout the story you see different types of symbolism, all looking wind hinting at life, the colors, the clock, and the ball itself. The ball being the people’s attempt to run from Death, while in the end they learned the hard way, that you cannot escape Death, no matter how hard you try. This is shown throughout the ball by the clock ticking down, the transition of colors from new life to death, and in the end the figure that is a representation of the Red Death itself. Throughout the story apes is ushering the ball as a way to show how futile it is to try to run from Death, because in the end no matter how far you run, ho hard you fight, or how strongly you defend Death is always coming to you.
