Fort Sumter, being the location of the first battle in the Civil War, is a major historical landmark. A cannon from the very first battle of the Civil War has a lot of history that would be good in a museum. This is why one of the cannons used there would be a good artifact

This political cartoon threatens the idea of the return of slavery and shows evil characters like the KKK.This artifact has even put some light on former President Andrew Johnson as he was the one who originally vetoed the act of Reconstruction and the cartoon plays homage that, when he is described as Moses with a tablet that says veto on it. There is also a description of Robert E. Lee as the person crouching and burning books which is something so hateful and evil. These artists put so much effort into using symbolism to show the absolute evil intentions of the KKK.

I am nominating the Cotton Gin for my museum because it is an invention that rapidly increased the speed of cleaning cotton and transformed the cotton industry into one of the most profitable industries during the Industrial Revolution. Industrialization was beginning to grow and the cotton market was rapidly expanding, with the Spinning Jenny recently invented, making the manufacturing of cotton much easier. As a result, the production and cleaning of cotton needed to be sped up so it could be sent out and manufactured equally as fast. With the invention of the Cotton Gin, it did the work of 50 slaves in one hour and allowed more slaves to focus on picking cotton, dramatically increasing the amount of cotton being produced. Because the production was rapidly increased, the Cotton Gin significantly increased the money that could be made in the cotton market. Many people took advantage of this machine and made loads of money by doing so. I am nominating the Cotton Gin because it was a key machine in Industrialization that made cotton profitable and was important to the Industrial revolution and the growth of it.

I am representing the Jim Crow era with a sign that reads Restroom Reserved for Whites. We know that the separate but equal ruling rooted from plessy vs. ferguson case said that seperating races in facilities and private spaces is not unconstitutional. Equal was far from what was provided for the Black community. Too often Black people had to go to extra measures to achieve anything for example something so simple as going to the bathroom. Furthermore, these circumstances were greatly represented in the movie hidden figures where one of the main characters vividly explained the unfair rules in which black employees were required to walk more than half a mile to relieve themselves. On the other hand one good thing that came from the separate but equal ruling were new Historically Black Colleges or University (HBCU). These were places where Black people could thrive regardless of their color and promoted black power and excelance.

Rodney King brutal beating (visual artifact)

Rodney King an un-armed black man was brutally beaten to the brink of death on March 3rd 1991. A nearby onlooker was testing his new camcorder not knowing he would film history. The video would be repeatedly played on national television sparking concern and outrage across the nation. The Los Angeles Police Department was the violent mob. officers involved in the situation ejected a stun gun with hopes of taking control of the situation. Suddenly the eyes were on the LAPD and the chief of police stated that all oficers involved will be disciplened and three will face criminal charges. The Chief of Police ackowledged the excessive force used against Rodney King simply to take him into custody. The fourteen officers involved struck King from 53-56 times causing bruises, broken bones, and scars. Approximetly one year later when a California jury failed to convict all three police officers a nationwide revolt began. Most famously this is how the LA riots began killing some and injuring many. New issues such as police and trial reform were soon to be deliberated. King became a symbol of police misconduct and brutality and uttered the simple but powerful word "Can we all get along?"

Col. Robert Gould Shaw's Civil War Sword

I am nominating this sword from the Civil War because it represents how black people fought for their inalienable right of freedom, but also shows how their freedom was taken away in the first place. This sword belonged to Col. Robert Gould Shaw who was a member of the 54th regiment from Massachusetts which was the first black regiment to fight their own battle during the Civil War (The Battle of Fort Wagner). Gould Shaw died in the battle of Fort Wagner in South Carolina, 1863, which is an example of how far black people were willing to go for their freedom. Slavery was prominent in the south at the time, a thing that let white's own them and work them to death, treating them horrifically in the process of it. As a result, this battle was a big milestone for blacks in the Civil War and in general, as this was the first battle black's were able to fight alone, but also was the first time they could fight against the people who enslaved them. This sword was used in a battle for black freedom, but also used by someone formerly enslaved. Because this battle was fought over freedom, an inalienable right according to the Constitution, this sword is an example of people who do not have freedom fighting for their freedom and also an inalienable right being taken from them.

Following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor much of the nation was outraged. Many took to the streets to call for justice for the lost victims. George Floyd who was a victim of police brutality was suffocated to death by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A long 8:46 seconds was enough to block Floyds airway. Although he repeatedly exclaimed that he could not breathe, the stubborn police officer refused to act in Floyds interest. Something so simple and avoidable was unfortunately turned deadly. This isn't the first time such events have occurred. Tamir Rice, Daunte Wright, Eric Garner, Latoya James and hundreds more were all victims of the recklessness of the police force. In the summer of 2020 small and large protests took place in each corner of the Nation. A couple of signs from different demonstrations are a representation of the grief, fear, sadness, and hope of protesters.

Official Women's March Program

I am nominating the official program of the Women's March, DC, 1913 because it represents how women were determined and driven to get people to see their exclusion from democracy and propel themselves into the national media. The women's suffrage march contained over 5,000 people and was held the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration (on the same route). Although the march was well planned, over 250,000 crowd members arrived and blocked the procession, eventually stopping it. In this crowd, female marchers were surrounded by men who made vulgar comments and physically harassed them. The marchers received no support from the police and eventually locked arms and held their ground, fending off the crowd until the army got there. The program and march is an example of how women were dedicated to exposing the imbalance of democracy and getting their movement into the national spotlight. The women were brave by standing their ground and sticking up for what they believed in, not backing down to the men. As a result, I am nominating the program from the DC Women's March of 1913 because it represents how women were driven to expose the gap in the USA's democracy and get themselves into the national news.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by president Abraham Lincoln on the first of January 1863. At that time the Civil War was ongoing. The Confederacy was fighting in order to retain an economy based on slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery in Southern states, at least on paper. Therefore slaves were not immediately released in the South. Moreover, the Emancipation Proclamation did not apply in the North. Nevertheless the Emancipation Proclamation was a manifestation of a long dream by slaves and abolitionists. As such it showed the path to a more modern and progressive nation.

9/11 Firefighter T-Shirt

I am nominating this Fire Department T-Shirt from the 9/11 rumble because it represents the role firefighters played in 9/11 and the fearlessness they displayed. The 9/11 attack was a terrorist attack on the US, taking down the Twin Towers, crashing into the Pentagon, and a fourth plane that was likely headed for the capitol, but was hijacked and crashed in PA. These attacks were tragic to the US, but united country, with President Bush saying, "Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve." 9/11 killed nearly 3,000 people and over 340 firefighters. The firefighters were the people who went into the buildings after they were hit, trying to save as many civilians as possible and prepare for what could possibly come in the future. The firefighters put their lives on the line and were heroes in the city after 9/11, as they were fearless and selfless, giving their lives to save others and trying to protect the nation. The firefighters also would have to be the ones going and dealing with the repercussions of what happened, with fires around the city and cleaning up the fallen towers. The firefighters as a result became role models to many for their brave and heroic actions, leading to many admiring them and honoring them for doing work that was damaging and traumatic for many. This shirt represents their efforts, as it was buried and worn by one of the firemen who lost their lives, one of the many things they were admired for. Because of how impactful these first-responders were, it is important we remember and honor them and their actions and this shirt does that exceptionally well by showing their efforts and bravery during this attack.

The Cold War was a period of great tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. America had always been circumspect of Russia due to its communist rule. Americans were also concerned with Russia's leader Joseph Stalin. At the same time Russia resented America because it did not treat Russia as a legitimate partner.
