A holistic approach looks at engaging and developing the person as a whole individually: physical, intellectual, emotional and social views. For health, care and support to be integrated, it must be person-centred, coordinated and tailored to the needs and preferences of the individual, their carer and family. It is crucial that mental health services put holistic approach in place to benefit assessment, treatment and support. The can be looking at things such as: social security, finance and well-being , this can benefit people that are mentally unwell as it is a person centred care approach looking at all aspects where care needs to be provided. (Anonymous2015, Jul 06.

It is important to take a holistic approach because it means that the individuals' needs are all met, not only their psychical needs. Considering their intellectual, emotional and social being is important because if all needs of the whole person are met then the individual is still able to get the best treatment for them aswell as looking at their rights, independence, family/friends and preferences. The hin-south London report reads " Research has found that person-centred care can help to improve people’s health and reduce the burden on health services ".

A holistic approach allows patients to have their physical, intellectual, emotional, and social needs to be assessed and taken into consideration. In relation to the Young People's Health Partnership young people are in need of a more effective holistic approach as according to this booklet they are in need of help "to address a range of inter-related personal, practical, emotional, health, social welfare and legal needs simultaneously" (Young People's Health Partnership, March 2014). Therefore, more services for young people need to have a holistic approach in order for them to feel supported with problems they may face, such as their social development and where they fit into society, their relationships, their health, and educational needs.
These services can help young people with other problems they may face, for example, they may have a stronger and more trusting bond with their family if they are receiving help from these services, as they will be assessed fully rather than having their needs ignored or skipped over.
http://www.youthaccess.org.uk/downloads/makingintegrationarealitypart2final.pdf - Young People's Health Partnership, Youth Access, Making Integration a Reality, March 2014.

The professional will encourage individuals to make life choices whilst assessing needs.
A holistic approach is significant for individuals who are in need and require a lot of support. A holistic approach is “expensive, time-consuming and require a great deal of expertise”. (Donovan, 2013). The holistic approach is there for individuals who need support as well as their carers’ and families. – The NHS Constitution (2013) by Donovan - A Holistic approach to valuing our culture [online] Available from: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/197826/Holistic_Approach_10_May_2013finalforweb.pdf [accessed 08/02/2017].

A holistic approach should be taken in order to treat and value an individual as a whole person (taking; physical, intellectual, emotional and social factors into consideration). Focusing on the entirety of their needs, preferences and their care. This is because the holistic approach is person centred. The importance of this if very high, due to the fact, looking at an induvial as an actual person, who does have needs and wants, can create an empowered environment for the person. As well as giving them all of the appropriate care values and ensuring the ethical values are met to fit the individual. In regards to teaching, holistic teachers practice by using the holistic approach in hopes of creating critical students. (Patel.2003). This benefits both the student and the teacher as it allows the student to develop their learning, thinking outside of the box and getting a wider range of knowledge, whilst the teacher can gather information to find out the type of student the pupil is/will become.

Nadish V.Patel.2003.
Holistic approach is one of the care values. It is important because it takes into account individuals' physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual needs (Liverpool Echo, 2015). This can help individuals in the long term as well as short term as conditions such as cancer can have an impact on a variety of aspects of individuals' lives and if these are taken into account, this can help prevent long term difficulties such as mental health problems (Liverpool Echo, 2015).

We should take the holistic approach towards individuals, this means we are able to assess their PIES needs in order to review what the best solution within their care or what they require. However, an example could be preparing them for fees for care in later life, such as older people within a care home. “Without a holistic approach, the focus would be on how to fund the care fees for the person in the care home, missing entirely the fact that further income is essential”(THEWEALTHCAREPARTNERSHIP:2017) Looking at whether the individual is able to afford fees such as living with a care home how much are the costings. Without taking this into account, you would not be looking at the individual as a whole. If the individual requires certain care which means this would be looking at how funding fees would benefit the individual’s needs such as their health needs and their psychical needs, if they need 24 hour care as the individual may not be able to care for themselves. Also looking at their social needs as if they are surrounded by other individuals and the individual is currently feeling isolated as they do not have any company, being within a care home would benefit the individual as they are able to interact with others their age. Looking at this means that they are not just looking at certain parts of the individual but you are looking at the whole picture by taking different parts into account. The Wealth Care (no date) the importance of a ‘holistic’ approach to paying for care.

You should take a holistic approach because you are looking at the person as a whole and as an individual. It also takes into consideration everything and everyone that affects you in any way. “Ms Lane was upset by the diagnosis of a DVT that would require warfarin for three months. The most disappointing aspect for her was that she had booked a holiday, involving a long flight, which might now have to be postponed.” … “As nurses, we discuss lifestyle changes to prevent disease or promote health. In this case lifestyle changes included those for management of the warfarin dose within a safe and therapeutic range” (Nursing times; 2002) This shows that the nurses are using their ethics of independence and rights of the individual to provide for her health and her social needs and care values of providing individual care. They are caring for her health and social needs as they are making sure that she is cared for to prevent her from getting worse as well as ensuring that she can still enjoy her life and go on holiday as if she wasn’t able to go on holiday due to her health it could cause her to get depressed.

https://www.nursingtimes.net/clinical-archive/medicine-management/taking-a-holistic-approach/205737.article Nursing times (Taking a holistic approach; 2002)
