Introduction: Who Am I as an Early Childhood Educator

This portfolio showcases the knowledge, experiences, and professional skills I have acquired during my time in the Early Childhood Education program at Fanshawe College. I have established a solid foundation of knowledge about child development, play-based learning, and responsive relationships, which are key components in my ongoing development as a new educator.

I chose this program specifically because I have always been passionate about supporting the growth, curiosity, and emotional well-being of young children. Also, as an immigrant mother raising children in another cultural environment, I learned how important it is for children to feel seen, supported, and understood. These experiences compelled me to begin my journey in the ECE field, giving me the influence to become a teacher who values inclusiveness, empathy, and significant connections; thereby supporting children’s growth and development in all areas of their young lives.

Throughout the program, I completed placements at ABC Daycare and other early learning environments. It was here that I observed the competencies of children, applied intentional teaching practices and relationship-building with the children, and utilized the frameworks in ELECT and HDLH. It was during these placement experiences that I developed the skills of documentation and curriculum planning while building relationships with children and their families.

I look forward to beginning my third and final placement, which will provide me with the opportunity to further develop my confidence, make greater attempts at reflective practice, and grow in the professional setting of ECE. The following samples of my work represent some of the strengths I have achieved in... curriculum development, child development, advocacy, and professional learning.

Developing an understanding of the complexities of child development within the context of family, cultural, and physical environments was one of my key learning experiences during this assignment. I believe I was able to apply this knowledge through an in-depth case study of a child exhibiting developmental delays which were addressed through multiple frameworks of child development including ELECT and HDLH, and then through the application of the theory I developed a comprehensive view of child development along with clear and objective evidence of the child’s growth and development as well as providing evidence of professional ethical responsibility for the child’s overall wellbeing.

The process of doing so has enabled me to gain an incredible foundational knowledge and basic understanding of Child Development, Play-Based Learning, and Responsive and Inclusive/Culturally Respectful Practices.

I have developed my understanding through both academic theories (ELECT / HDLH / Attachment Theory/Sociocultural Perspectives) and my lived experiences, as a parent, an immigrant, and an emerging Early Childhood Professional. These experiences have therefore enabled me to provide services to children and families using an empathetic approach, grounded in critical reflection on myself and my experiences as a mother and immigrant, as well as in a continued commitment to meaningful support for children and families.

The artifacts in my e-Portfolio represent the academic courses, observational records, curriculum planning documents, pedagogical documentation, and professional reflections I have collected throughout my coursework to date. The artifacts in this portfolio have been carefully selected to represent my practice by illustrating how I have purposefully incorporated theory into my work and intentionally created environments that support children's well/neighborhood, play/curiosity, problem-solving, and belonging.

The accompanying reflection statements provide insight into my professional growth, the development of my critical thinking skills, and my openness to and ability to act on feedback to continue improving and developing my practice.

As I continue to grow as a professional in the Early Childhood Educator/Mentor role, I view my e-Portfolio as a living document of my journey and milestones that will continue to support my development as a Professional, a Reflective Practitioner, and a Lifelong Learner. Additionally, my e-Portfolio will demonstrate that I am prepared to make a positive contribution to teaching and learning in early learning while I continue to grow as a Reflective Practitioner and an Effective Educator.
