Halloween, the 31st of October

New Orleans is famous for its mysterious atmosphere and traditions, so it's a perfect place to celebrate Halloween.

On this day people usually wear scary costumes, go trick-or-treating and carve Jack-O'-Lanterns, but my plans also include some other things to do. I'm going to start my adventure with a haunted tour through the French Quarter, the city's historic heart. Then I would like to visit Vodoo shops to learn more about the history behind these centuries-old spiritual practices. And finally, I'm planning on visiting 'Krewe of Boo', New Orleans's official Halloween parade. I expect to see plenty of floats and dance performances, themed after monsters, spooks, and ghosts.

The Christmas season is one of the most wonderful times of the year in New Orleans with heart-warming special events and magnificent decorations around every corner.

A highlight of the holiday season in New Orleans is the Bonfires on the Levee, built to guide Papa Noël (Santa Claus), so I'm going to watch beautiful bonfires lit along the Mississippi River. Another spectacular event that I want to visit is Candlelight Caroling in Jackson Square. Traditionally, Jackson Square is illuminated by hundreds of candles held by people, singing popular Christmas songs. Also, I would like to have an opportunity to visit New Orleans Ballet Theatre during the Christmas season to see the Nutcracker.

Valentine's Day traditions include exchanging gifts, such as chocolates or roses, and a romantic night out on the town. Hometown of jazz and home to some of the most romantic places in the USA, New Orleans is a great place to celebrate Valentine's Day.

One of my plans is to book a Steamboat Natchez cruise. It departs from French Quarter and is able to charm anyone with its romantic atmosphere filled with the sound of jazz. The other planned thing to do is to visit New Orleans City Park with my significant other. Waterways, bridges, lush green lawns, and museums make it one of the most romantic places in New Orleans.

Mardi Gras, the 21st of February

Mardi Gras is a Christian holiday and popular cultural phenomenon that dates back thousands of years. New Orleans plays host to some of the holiday’s most famous public festivities.

I'm going to take part in a Mardi Gras parade to watch its traditional floats outfitted with elaborate decorations including large papier-mache sculptures and hand-painted flowers. Participants of the parade usually throw balls, play music, eat great food and wear extravagant Mardi Gras costumes, so I need to prepare masks and wigs. I would also like to buy a ticket to a lavish Mardi Gras ball. Traditional balls present staged pageants that depict stories, usually from mythology or history.
